Dear Friends in Christ:  Sunday:  This Sunday is Reformation Sunday. We commemorate Martin Luther and the reformation of the church. We also recognize that the church always needs to be reforming, that is, refocusing on Jesus, rather than our own ideas of how to be church. Come and hear God’s Word and be fed by Jesus in bread and wine. Adult Education:  This Sunday at 9:15. The theme is confirmation for adults, see below. All are welcome. Pastor Mark will be leading. Reading for this Sunday: Please read Romans chapter 3 plus the sidebar notes for this chapter and the introduction to Hebrews in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.)  This chapter was pivotal for Luther to come to the realization that it is Jesus Christ who makes us right (justified) in God’s eyes, not any good works we do ourselves. 3:28 says “For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.” Please pay attention to the sidebar notes, which are very helpful.  If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark.

Worship Schedule: The service of Holy Communion at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

All Saints Sunday: A sign-up sheet is in the narthex for those who wish to have a loved one remembered on All Saints Sunday, November 4, 2018

Reading for Next Week: Please read Revelation chapter 21 plus the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.)   We celebrate All Saints Day next Sunday, which is a time for us to reflect on the reward for the saints: everlasting life. Remember that the New Testament definition of a saint is one who is baptized into Christ. Revelation 21 is a vision of the end time, a vision of the heavenly throne room, where God will make all creation new. Please pay attention to the sidebar notes, which are very helpful. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark.

Adult Education: Time for Adult confirmation. Do you remember your confirmation training? Can you explain Christian faith to someone who isn’t Christian? If not, it’s time for a tune up. Join us for a basic confirmation course. We will be viewing quick paced, clever videos, then learning about faith all over again. Pastor Mark will be leading. Please plan on joining us.

Attendance: On October 21, 2018, attended worship. On October 24, 2018, 16    attended service at Lexington.

A Big Thank You to all who help Mike Wilms.  He really appreciated all the meals, transportation and well wishes as well as the donations for his much needed new shoes.  He wanted to let you all know how grateful he is for all your support.

Make a Difference! Help Needed!  Did you know that Make a Difference Day is this month?  What a great reason to get a team of people together to volunteer and give back to the community!  Home of the Sparrow has a housing unit located in Woodstock that is vacant and are in need of many hands to get it painted and ready for the next family to move in.  The unit is quite large:  3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms plus a loft. We can paint any day or weekend that would work for you between the time frame of Wednesday, October 10 to Saturday October 27th.  We will provide the supplies, all you need to do is come and volunteer your time! If you help, contact Michelle Lusmann, Volunteer Program Manager at Mlusmann@HOSparrow.org

Mobile Food Pantry:  November 3rd Thank you so much to all who helped make our recent Mobile Food Pantry a success on September 8th.  For those who were unable to join, there were 170 families that received a week's worth of groceries across the morning as result of the generous financial donation from The Stahl Family Foundation, along with volunteers from across many walks of life in our community.  You are invited to join us in serving for our next event on November 3. Consider joining us?  It is a small amount of time that provides a significant result, both in the lives of the people you help, but also in your own heart. Register now via the following link:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4DAAA723AAFD0-mobile23  Our neighbors and our community deserves to know they are loved and can receive help through their struggles.  At The Chapel, "we are more than food" as we work together to bring hope one relationship at a time.  "We show God’s love when we are willing to help others; we show His strength when we take on the task He gives us to do."  Questions, contact Ken Rasbid at Ken.Rasbid@gmail.com

Operation Warm, Volunteers needed: November 10th. Thank you so much to all who donated money for the 50 coats!  We made our goal!  Our campaign is, however, still running, Sept 16- Oct 21.  So if you still want to donate,  go to the website and make a donation using the following link: https://give.operationwarm.org/team/183187.  On November 10th we will be giving out the new warm winter coats to the children who come to try one on. It will take place at The Chapel Church, 330 S. Old Rand Road, Lake Zurich 7am - 4pm.  If you would like to help you MUST sign up with the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090f48aea62fa46-lake2  You can then pick what you would like to do.  Please act fast, these spots fill up quickly. Again, thank you so much for  your generosity and keeping the kids warm at the bus stop this winter! See Donna Walstrum with questions.
In Crisis?  Anyone anywhere can be affected by mental health struggles including depression, anxiety, having feelings of being overwhelmed, or having suicidal thoughts.  It has been in the news lately about the significant increase (up nearly 30%) in the annual rate of suicide from 1999-2016. The key to preventing people from reaching the point of suicide is to talk about it and offer help, encouragement and resources to those struggling to keep living.  The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255 and the crisis text line is text CONNECT to 741741 for people who are in distress and feel like they are at risk of hurting themselves, or if you know of a person who is at risk.

Mission Projects Day: Feb. 2, 2018. We are looking for individuals that would like to donate items for the various kits that we assemble.  There are sign-up sheets in the hallway.  Indicate how many of each item that you plan to provide and check them off when you drop them off. Put the items in the bins in the hallway with "Mission Projects Day" on them somewhere.  It is a great time to find things on sale!  We are also looking for individuals to help cut the fringe for the fleece blankets sew school kit bags and pillows for hospice that we will stuff on Mission Projects Day.  If you can help in any way, please sign up!  If you have any questions, please call Sue Koenig.  Thank you!!
