This Sunday
8am service of Holy Communion 9:15am Sunday School / Coffee & refreshments / Middle Schoolers Triple D 10:30am service of Holy Communion Reading for this Sunday (Nov. 10) : Luke 20:27-38. “What is heaven like?” asks a child. Grown-ups wonder too. Lots of questions remain unanswered about heaven and the resurrected life. In this reading some religious leaders try to trap Jesus with a trick question about the after-life. Jesus doesn’t fall into their trap. Instead, he satisfies our longings, questions and fears with Good News that in the resurrected life we will be fully alive to God! As we join together in worship at the Lord’s Table today may you taste and see that the Lord is good! Welcome Rev. Laura Schordje presiding and preaching today! For years she has given her gifts of music leadership with congregations in the Chicago area. Then enrolling at Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago she has refined her skills as a music and worship minister. She loves classic films and cooking, and married with a grown son she still has time to spoil her family’s cat and dog. We welcome her passion for the Gospel and sharing it with us today. One Service next week (Nov 17) – 9:00 a.m. ONE SERVICE along with BRUNCH awaits you together with enlightening CONVERSATION on “What Matters to You?” Food sign up is on the hallway bulletin board. In preparation for November 17 consider these questions: When did you join Peace Lutheran church and why? What keeps you here? What motivates you to join in its ministry and mission? Then, think of a story you can tell in 2 minutes that best describes what Peace Lutheran Church is like, an experience you recall when this church was really being the church. Parents – invite children at home to prepare by asking, “when did you first know that Peace Lutheran was YOUR church?” Read 1 Peter 2:1-10. Nominations for Peace Lutheran Church Call Committee are now being taken. See insert for more information. The Peace Lutheran Church Transition Team is guiding us through a time of listening and learning to provide key input for the Call Process. This Sunday
8am service of Holy Communion 9:15am Sunday School / Coffee & refreshments / Middle Schoolers Triple D 10:30am service of Holy Communion Reading for Today (November 3) “Blessed are they…” says Jesus in what we call The Beatitudes. It may surprise us to find who are singled out here for blessing – the poor, the hungry, the grieving, and the excluded. Jesus follows these words of blessing by calling his disciples – including us – to a lifestyle of radical love, concluding with the most basic of all, “do to others as you would have them do to you.” Please read Luke 6:20-31. Blessed be their memory: Today in worship we remember those who rest from their labors and are now with the Lord. Remembering his love for us on our journey, we recall those who have arrived safely at journey’s end. For their sake and ours we proclaim God’s promise of “the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.” We will read their names aloud today in remembrance. This will take place as we prepare for communion in the Great Thanksgiving prayer. Welcome Pastor Dan Shutters, guest presider and preacher today. Pastor Shutters resides in Lake County while having spent most of his ministry in Pennsylvania. He is a person with many interests (magic!), hobbies (origami), writings (books), talents (running) and more. We welcome his sharing some of those with us today! One Worship Service on Sunday, November 17. “WHAT MATTERS TO YOU?” Beginning at 9:00 a.m. one service, brunch and enlightening conversation awaits you! Food sign up is on the hallway bulletin board. "Jurassic world" ..."a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." -- these are familiar references to other worlds created in Hollywood. And there's "The Matrix" and of course the whole series of Marvel movies too! This Sunday at Peace, in Jesus' prayer (Luke 11:1-13) we are introduced to another world: Jesus invites us to ask for God's World to come to us and into our world. He invites us to pray, "Thy kingdom come." Another world? Breaking in here? Now? Really? Indeed it is really real. It's a whole New World. Come and see!
Worship Schedule: The service of Holy Communion is our summer schedule at 9:00 a.m. Pastoral Care: Pastor Dale Ziemer is available to respond to all pastoral needs. You can reach him by the church phone 847-438-4400, where he checks messages regularly if not in the office. You may contact him via email at pastor@peacelutheranlz.com . Reading for next week (August 4): Luke 12:13-21. According to nearly every survey on the topic, arguments about money have the dubious honor of being the number one source of conflict between married people. Jesus is approached by one whose family was troubled by finances. Jesus re-frames the conversation. Wow! Real lessons for life here! Read in the Lutheran Study Bible and brief commentary if you can make the time this week. Adult Education: On break for summer. We will resume in September. Please pull Pastor Dale aside to share ideas and thoughts about “adult education” for the fall. Attendance: On July 21, 2019 78 attended service. On July 24, 2019, 13 attended service at Lexington. Prayer Requests: We pray for those who need healing and wholeness: for Tod Kunschke, Kristen Jorgensen, Joyce Smith, Greg, Larry, Judy Riley, Gabriel Salami, Mike Wilms, Kevin Foley, Rob Olsen, Warren Heuck and Anita Brazeau. Our practice is we will pray for an individual for at least 4 Sundays or until the end of the following month. After that time, we ask that you contact the office to keep your loved one on the prayer list. If a loved one inadvertently falls off the prayer list, please request to put this person back on the list. Thank you. We need pray-ers! If you would like to be a participant in the Circle of Prayer, please contact Terry Koncel at peaceprays@mail.com. Church Administrator: Allison Hearst is our church administrator. She works Tuesday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. One of the many things Allison is in charge of is the church calendar. She can be reached at 847-438-4400 or peacelzoffice@yahoo.com Cords of Wood: There is firewood available for free-will donations. It’s stacked over by the labyrinth. See Mike Rojek or Beth Piff for details. Pastoral Transition: We celebrated farewell and Godspeed to Pastor Mark and his family at the end of June. While it would not be appropriate to call on him any longer for any pastoral services, we do continue to give thanks for his ministry among us. These wonderful words were inscribed on the plaque presented to him: Pastor Mark Sundberg, You have served the Lord with gladness - tirelessly, faithfully, and with great compassion. You have given hope and encouragement to many. Your presence in the lives of others has truly made a difference. Now, as the day dawns on the next chapter in your life, May God continue to richly bless you and watch over you. May the God of peace grant you peace now and always. Just take what you want and bring them back by December. Soon there will be hospice pillows to be sewn too. Keep you eye out for school, health and baby related items being on sale to go in the kits that we make. You can find a full list of what items we can use by going to www.lwr.org and look under "getting involved", then "quilts and kits". There are now sign up sheets in the hallway for the items that will be needed for the baby, school and health kits that we make for Lutheran World Relief at Mission Projects Day. Sign up for as many items as you would like and bring them back to church no later that December 29, 2019. Thank you one and all! Please call Sue Koenig if you have any questions about items. Ongoing Opportunities Simply Giving: Many of our members and friends give with Simply Giving automated debit. Do you know the story on Peace Lutheran Youth? They are on their way to Cledenin, West Virginia this Sunday where they will engage in disaster response construction work. Working side by side with teens from St. Peter’s Lake Zurich and Christ Lutheran Palatine, together with a few PLC adults, other Christian college youth, and professional contractors! Just imagine the fun, the work, the learning, the service they are providing! They will share in Communion before they leave at 6am Sunday morning.
There was another celebrated journey 50 years ago: Apollo 11 and the first moon landing. Do you know the story on Buzz Aldrin? He had special permission to bring Communion on that flight and shared in the Meal after they landed – get the story by clicking on this link . Come join in worship and Communion this Sunday – and experience the Lord’s supper – on the way to West Virginia… on the moon… and on YOUR journey too. Worship Schedule: The service of Holy Communion is our summer schedule at 9:00 a.m. Pastoral Care: Transition Pastor Dale Ziemer has begun his ministry with us. He is available to respond to all pastoral needs. Pastor's Email: Note the email for our pastor has changed. If you want to contact Pastor Dale Ziemer via email, please send your email messages to pastor@peacelutheranlz.com Pastoral Transition: We celebrate Pastor Mark’s good and faithful ministry among us! Now that he has retired, he is no longer available to function as our pastor. According to the guidelines set by our Synod, it would not be appropriate for him to preside at weddings, baptisms or funerals, make hospital calls for nursing home visits, or provide other pastoral services for members of our congregation. This is partly out of fairness to Pastor Mark. If he were to say yes to one person’s request, it would be awkward for him to say no to another person’s request. And it is also out of respect for our new pastor, whether a transitional pastor or our future called pastor. That person is now our pastor and is the one who has be called to minister to us. Adult Mission Trip update: A big THANK YOU to all who helped support the adult mission trip to Hattiesburg, MS this past week! Whether you purchased a Lou Malnati's pizza coupon, went to Culvers or the California Pizza Kitchen on our fundraising nights, made a donation, prayed for us-we appreciate it all! We had 26 people in our group this year! We were able to get 3 homes ready for families to move back in after repairing them from the tornado damage and 3 more are nearly ready. Many different construction projects were done. We also had a team of people doing community service each day and we helped at a thrift shop, a literacy program and a food pantry ministry. Every person worked really hard and made an impact in this community. Please thank the following businesses for their support as well: Culver's of Lake Zurich, California Pizza Kitchen (Deer Park), Be Safe Driving School, Amanda Howland, J.D., Ahlgrim Family Funeral Services, Steve Wenzel Plumbing, Bottom Line Solutions, and AM Woodland Outdoor Design. A trip like this doesn't happen without the support of many people so thank you once again! Consider joining us next year-we will most likely be going somewhere in the mid-west to help either with recovery from flooding or possibly from tornado damage. The trip will be mid-late June 2020. Everyone can do something and we welcome return participants and new comers age 18 and up, equally! It is a meaningful experience. Sunday: We look at what it means to be a disciple. Does being a disciple mean extravagant display of faith? Mary of Bethany (Martha’s sister) shows this to Jesus. What does this mean for us today? Come and hear God’s Word and be fed by Jesus in bread and wine. Adult Education: This Sunday we continue the video series on the Gospel of Luke. See details below. Reading for this Sunday: Please read John chapter 12 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter is a collection of traditions about Jesus. The point of the chapter might be described as “what is ultimate glory?” It is not Jesus’ raising Lazarus from the dead, or the acclaim given to Jesus by the crowds, but it is Jesus’ “glorification,” that is, his being lifted up on the cross, lifted up in resurrection, and lifted up to eternal life for us all. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Worship Schedule: The service of Holy Communion is at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Lenten Worship Schedule: Lent 4 Thursday April 4 6:15 p.m. Soup Supper / 7:00 Service at Peace Lutheran Lent 5 Thursday April 11 6:15 p.m. Soup Supper / 7:00 Service at Peace Lutheran Holy Week Worship Schedule: Passion/Palm Sunday April 14 8:00 and 10:30 Holy Communion Service 9:15 Easter Egg Hunt at Silverado Maundy Thursday April 18 7:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Good Friday April 19 7:30 p.m. Choir Cantata - at St. Peter’s Easter Sunday April 21 8:00am and 10:30am Holy Communion Service 9:00 a.m. Easter Breakfast Easter Lilies: In keeping with tradition, we are purchasing 4 large and 16 small Easter Lilies to adorn the Altar on Easter Sunday. If you would like to purchase one or more of these lilies, please sign up on the sheet located on the Narthex table. The larger flowers are $17 each and the smaller are $14; an envelope for payment is by the sign-up sheet. Lilies may be taken home after the 10:30am service on Easter Sunday. Please contact Jean Foltin or Kari Mrazek with any questions. Thank-you. Lenten midweek services: will be on Thursday nights this year at 7:00 p.m. We will be singing the Holden Evening Prayer and will hear Faith Journeys from one of our Peace members each week. Soup Supper is before the service at 6:15 p.m. Attendance: On March 31, 2019 80 attended service. On April 3, 2019, 10 attended service at Lexington. Reading for Next Week: Please read Luke chapter 23 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter is the Passion (suffering) story of Jesus. Please pay attention to the excellent side notes. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Adult Education: Today we begin a new video series on the Gospel of Luke called “Hearing Luke: the Apostolic Gospel.” David Tiede, a scholar of Luke, will be the video presenter. There will be time for discussion afterward with Pastor Mark. This is the Luke year in our worship; that is, almost all of our Gospel passages are from Luke. It is important for us to see the whole picture of Luke, as we work through his Gospel passages this worship year. Come and enjoy! Church Administrator: Allison Hearst is our church administrator. She works Tuesday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. One of the many things Allison is in charge of is the church calendar.
