Dear Friends in Christ: Sunday: This Sunday we get to hear more of Jesus’ “sermon on the plain,” including the “Golden Rule.” What a great guideline for Christian behavior: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” It’s harder than it seems, however! We will unpack this and other teachings of Jesus this Sunday. Come and hear God’s Word and be fed by Jesus in bread and wine. Adult Education: This Sunday we continue studying the book “Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I have Loved.”) This book considers the problem of when bad things happen to good people. See details below. Reading for this Sunday: Please read Luke chapter 6 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter includes Luke’s version of “The Sermon on the Mount.” Notice the challenging differences from Matthew chapter 5. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark.
Worship Schedule: The service of Holy Communion is at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Contact Information Update: Members Team has placed contact information sheets in the narthex. Please take a look at it and up-date your information if necessary. Thank you. Dried Palms Needed: Bring your dried palm crosses from last Palm Sunday to be burned for ashes for Ash Wednesday, March 6. There is a basket on the narthex table. Reading for Next Week: Please read Luke chapter 9 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter is focused around the theme of glory and servanthood. Though the disciples see Jesus’ glory in the story of the transfiguration - the passage for next Sunday, they also learn the difficult reality of sacrifice - being a servant, as Jesus himself will demonstrate on the cross. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Ash Wednesday and Lent: Please make a point of joining us on Wednesday night, March 6, for Ash Wednesday worship at 7:30. We will offer imposition of ashes and will celebrate communion. St. Peter’s will be joining us, including the combined choirs. It is a beautiful experience - don’t miss it! Lenten midweek services will be on Thursday nights this year at 7:00 p.m. We will be singing the Holden Evening Prayer and will hear Faith Journeys from one of our Peace members each week. Soup Supper is before at 6:15 p.m. Adult Education: Today we continue a book study on “Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I Have Loved)” by Kate Bowler. Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School. She was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 cancer in her 30s, when she was a mother of a toddler. In the book, she challenges the “easy answers” that Christians have posed when something bad happens to someone good. Please let Pastor Mark know if you would like a book ordered. The cost of the book is $13. Please read chapters 3 and 4 for next Sunday. You may attend the sessions even if you do not read the book; there will be plenty to discuss. Pastor Mark will be leading. Attendance: On February 17, 2019 99 attended service. On February 20, 2019, 16 attended service at Lexington. Church Administrator: Allison Hearst is our church administrator. Dear Friends in Christ
Sunday: This Sunday we get to hear Jesus beatitudes according to Luke. Besides the “blesseds,” there are some “woes” in Luke’s version. Was this a different teaching by Jesus in another location? Luke records this as Jesus’ “sermon on the plain” compared to Matthew’s “sermon on the mount.” We will try to determine the meaning of this text for us in today’s world. Come and hear God’s Word and be fed by Jesus in bread and wine. Adult Education: This Sunday we continue studying the book “Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I have Loved.” This book considers the problem of when bad things happen to good people. This Sunday we continue in the theme of Epiphany “to make known.” Luke introduces us to who Jesus is and what he is about. Come and hear God’s Word and be fed by Jesus in bread and wine. Adult Education: On break this Sunday. Next Sunday, February 10, we will begin a book study. The book is “Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I Have Loved).” This book considers the problem of when bad things happen to good people. See pastor Mark to purchase a book. Reading for this Sunday: Please read 1 Corinthians chapter 13 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter is the famous “love” chapter that is commonly read at weddings. Its purpose, however, is to describe the self-giving love of God in Jesus Christ (in Greek, agape), not the romantic love which most couples experience at the time of their wedding. (This biblical type of love is experienced in the long lasting, self-giving aspects of marriage.) This is a stunningly beautiful description of Christian love – a passage all Christians need to know intimately.
Thank you. Reading for Next Week: Please read 1 Corinthians chapter 15 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This is a powerful chapter where the apostle Paul speaks of his belief in Jesus Christ and the power of the resurrection. We will have passages from this chapter the next three Sundays. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Adult Education: On break today. Next Sunday, February 10, we will begin a book study on “Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I Have Loved)” by Kate Bowler. Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School. She was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 cancer in her 30s, when she had a toddler. In the book, she challenges the “easy answers” that Christians have posed when something bad happens to someone good. Please let Pastor Mark know if you would like a book ordered.
