Dear Friends in Christ
This Sunday we hear of the need to forgive. When Peter, Jesus’ lead disciples, asks if 7 times is enough to forgive a person (7 was a number of wholeness in Hebrew thought,) Jesus responds “not seven, but seventy-seven times!” In other words, we need to forgive endlessly and generously, just as our God endlessly and generously forgives us. Come to be nourished in faith by hearing the Word and sharing in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Adult Forum: Starts up again this Sunday. We will be viewing a video called “Reformation Roots.” This video explains how there are so many Christian denominations, and what differences are among them. Pastor Mark will lead discussion. Please read Romans chapter 14 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapters speaks of the challenges in the Roman church between those who restrict themselves from eating meat (which in those days was obtained only from the purveyors who sacrificed the meat to idols,) and those who claimed there was no god but God, so that the idol sacrifice was meaningless. Paul says that everyone should respect the eating habits of others, so as not to make them feel guilty. This is great treatise for consideration of each other in the church, in order to “build up” each other and the body of Christ. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Dear Friends in Christ
This Sunday we resume Sunday School at 9:15 and our regular worship schedule at 8:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Come to be nurtured in faith by hearing the Word and sharing in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This Sunday we focus on how Jesus calls us to be his church. It’s not always a perfect entity (perhaps hardly ever,) but Jesus works through this imperfect community, and we are responsible for carrying Jesus in a broken world. Adult Forum: Starts up again next Sunday, September 17. See below for details. Please read Romans chapter 13 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) In this chapter, the Apostle Paul again speaks of “building up,” including respecting the government, but mostly loving one another. He says the commandments “are summed up in this word, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Join us this Sunday at 9:00 a.m. (for the last time – one service) to be nurtured in faith by hearing the Word and sharing in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This Sunday we hear part 2 of the Peter drama. In last Sunday’s Gospel lesson, Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus responds that he will build his church on Peter, the “rock.” In this Sunday’s Gospel lesson, Peter gets it wrong. When Jesus tells his disciples that he must suffer and die in Jerusalem, the newly empowered Peter tries to prevent Jesus from this. Jesus’ response to Peter:”Get behind me, Peter, for you are on the side of humans, and not of the Divine.” Why must Jesus suffer? Why must human beings suffer? We will look at these themes this Sunday. Remember 2-service schedule and Sunday School resume September 10. Adult Forum: on break for the summer, starts up again on September 17. Please read Romans chapter 12 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter is essential for Christians to know well. This Sunday’s portion speaks of how Christians are to act. This part of Paul’s letters, more than any other part, reflects Jesus’ teachings. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. PRINTS OF PEACE PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS September 3, 2017 Worship Schedule: Next Sunday, September 10, is the beginning of the program year worship schedule. We will return to two services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Semiannual Congregation Meeting: Our next meeting will be October 8, between services, at 9:15 a.m. Please join us, whether you are a member or friend of Peace. Reading for Next Week: Please read Romans chapter 14 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter speaks of the challenges in the Roman community between those who restrict themselves from eating meat (which in those days was obtained only from the purveyors who sacrificed the meat to idols.) Paul says that everyone should respect the eating habits of others, so as not to make them feel guilty. This is a great treatise for consideration of each other in the church, in order to “build up” each other, and the body of Christ. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Ongoing Opportunities Adult Forum: Resumes September 17. We will be viewing a video series called Reformation Roots. The answers to these questions lie in the dramatic and turbulent times of the Reformation. Please plan on joining us. Simply Giving: Many of our members and friends give by Simply Giving automated debit. This program has no fees for you or our congregation. This program is very important for our congregation. It keeps income steady during the summer months when giving drops because of people being out of town. Please consider it! If you do participate in Simply Giving, when you worship please grab a Giving Acknowledgment Card from an usher in order to physically fulfill the act of giving during the offertory. There are forms on the table in the narthex. Giving Acknowledgment Cards: If you participate in the Simply Giving program or if you do not have an offering on a particular Sunday, you can still participate in the act of giving during the service. Ask an usher for a small laminated Giving Acknowledgment Card before you enter the sanctuary. You can then place the card in the offering plate to acknowledge your support of our ministries at Peace.
