Dear Friends in Christ
This Sunday we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation! We will hear some of the most pivotal passages for Martin Luther’s theology (understanding of God,) Romans “we are justified by grace,” and John “the truth will make you free.” There will be beautiful music from the Hand Bell choir and the Adult Choir. Come to be nourished in faith by hearing the Word and sharing in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Adult Forum: This Sunday we will continue viewing a video called “Reformation Roots.” This video explains how there are so many Christian denominations, and what differences are among them. Pastor Mark will lead discussion. Please read John chapter 8 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) This chapter was essential to Luther’s emphasis of grace in the Reformation. Luther points out that Jesus says, “the truth will set you free.” The truth is that we are free in our relationship with God; we are free from God’s demands, so therefore we can joyfully serve our neighbor – therefore serving God. This Sunday we consider Jesus’ conflict with the religious authorities of his time. They want to control him. Jesus bests them in their test for him. Ultimately he will pay the price on the cross for the brokenness of humankind, but Jesus makes his point that people should worship God, not the emperor. Come to be nourished in faith by hearing the Word and sharing in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This Sunday is our Semiannual Congregation meeting at 9:15 a.m. Please come to be informed about our mission at Peace Lutheran. Please stay for the Ministry Fair after the meeting – find out how you can support our ministry at Peace! The theme of worship this week is returning God’s blessing. Jesus tells a parable about tenants who work the vineyard. This ancient story has learnings for us today! Come to be nourished in faith by hearing the Word and sharing in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Adult Forum: On break this Sunday for the congregation meeting. Next Sunday we will continue viewing a video called “Reformation Roots.” This video explains how there are so many Christian denominations, and what differences are among them. Pastor Mark will lead discussion. Please read Philippians chapter 3 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) Here we hear the Apostle Paul complain about his competitors in the practice of preaching the Gospel – the “Judaizers,” who want Gentiles to convert to Judaism before they are recognized as Christians. Despite these challenges, Paul conveys some wonderful encouragement to the Christians in Philippi. The famous phrase “our citizenship is in heaven . . .” is found in verse 20. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. In this letter we see a mature Paul, one who perhaps is at the end of his life. He has softened his rhetoric here in this letter. Pay attention to the wonderful passages of encouragement in verses 4-7, and 8-9. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. This Sunday we hear Jesus speaking against the religious professionals – the chief priests and the elders – the ones who will end up accusing him and turning him over to the Roman authorities. Jesus tells a story about two sons, one who rebels, yet turns back and obeys his father, the other one who responds obediently, but then does not carry through with his obedience. This is another passage following the theme: the first will be last, and the last will be first. (The insiders will be the outsiders.) Is this upsetting for us? Come to be nourished in faith by hearing the Word and sharing in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Adult Forum: We continue viewing a video called “Reformation Roots.” This video explains how there are so many Christian denominations, and what differences are among them. Pastor Mark will lead discussion. Please read Philippians chapter 2 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) Here the apostle Paul continues to encourage the Christians at Philippi. In this chapter is one of the most amazing Christian passage, verses 6-11. Scholars think that these verses were a preexisting hymn that Paul used in his letter. It encourages Christians to be like Christ, giving up status and position, and becoming humble. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. PRINTS OF PEACE PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS October 1, 2017 We welcome Pastor Kerry Waller Dueholm who is filling in for Pastor Mark this morning while Pastor Mark is on Vacation. Reading for Next Week: Please read Philippians chapter 3 and the sidebar notes for this chapter in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) Here we hear the Apostle Paul complain about his competitors in spreading the Gospel - the “Judaizers,” who want Gentiles to become Jews before they are recognized as Christians. Among these challenges, Paul conveys some wonderful encouragement to the Christians in Philippi. The famous phrase “our citizenship is in heaven . . .” is found in verse 20. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark. Pastor Away: Pastor Mark will be away from the church from Thursday, September 28 through Tuesday, October 3.
