THIS SUNDAY
Worship
Luther once observed that the most basic expression of the church is the Christian household. He saw every father of a household as a bishop and every mother as a bishopess (Small Catechism, Introduction to the Study Edition). On account of our baptism, we are all priests who mediate Christ’s presence to the world. It is good and right to worship in our homes for we are the church.

Join us virtually for a Service of Holy Communion Sunday, November 8. The presence of Christ in, with, and under the elements depends solely upon God's promise to be found there. During the offering, you may set your table with bread and fruit juice. You may distribute the bread to the members of your household saying, “The body of Christ given for you.” After all have eaten, you may distribute the cup to the members of your household saying, "The blood of Christ shed for you.” Watch your email on Sunday morning for the link to the YouTube video and script to join in worship, or find it online at www.peacelutheranlz.com.

Adult Forum Sunday, Nov. 8, 10:00 a.m.
Do you have questions, thoughts, or concerns about the changes to worship on November 15? Join us Sunday at 10:00 a.m. for a time of fellowship and discussion!

SPECIAL NOTICE - Reimagining Worship
Sunday Morning Schedule Beginning Nov. 15
Join us over Zoom at 9:15 a.m. for virtual Sunday School, Adult Forum, and Coffee Hour! Stay for worship over Zoom at 10:30 a.m.

The Survey
Thank you to all who responded to the survey about worship times! The survey results were as follows on Thursday, November 5:

8:00 a.m. - 11 in favor
10:30 a.m. -  19 in favor
Other - 10 in favor

There appears to be widespread interest in resuming our normal Sunday morning routine. There was some interest in having a service around 9:00 a.m. However, this would conflict with Sunday School which has been meeting virtually from 9:15 - 10:00 a.m. since Rally Day. We will begin with one service at 10:30 a.m. and look into the possibility of adding an additional 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. service once we are comfortable in the new format.

FAQS
Q: What liturgy will you use?
A: We will use a simple liturgy based on the ancient pattern for personal prayer (a psalm, a reading, and our prayerful response). This shortened liturgy will last 30-45 minutes and emphasize God’s living Word as he encounters us through scripture and preaching.

Q: Will we celebrate Holy Communion?
A: No. The Lord’s Supper will not be celebrated in a physical gathering at this time. Worship leaders are exploring the possibility of a monthly all-Zoom communion service.

Q: What can I expect from an in-person worship service?
A: On November 15, we will limit the in-person gathering to 20 members. Attendance for future gatherings will be adjusted in conjunction with State, Local, and Synodical guidelines. These limits include the pastor, assisting minister if present in person, reader if present in person, tech volunteer, and ushers. Ushers will guide participants to assigned seats before worship and escort participants out after worship. Zoom participants will be projected on the walls in the sanctuary. Those gathered in-person are asked to refrain from speaking in unison and singing. All participants 2 years of age and older are required to wear masks while they are in the building.

Q: How can I reserve a seat?
A: Call the church office by noon the Thursday before the service. The church administrator will ask a few screening questions and take names down for seat assignments and contact tracing. If at capacity, the caller will be placed on a waiting list and invited to consider joining the service over Zoom for that Sunday. Please arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before the service Sunday morning. If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 on the day of the service or recently came in contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19, please join us over Zoom and consider getting tested for COVID.

Q: What happens if someone who participates in-person tests positive for COVID-19 afterwards?
A: In a timely manner, the church office will notify all in-person participants that they were exposed to COVID. Anyone exposed will be encouraged to self-quarantine and seek COVID testing as soon as possible. In-person gatherings will be suspended for two weeks following a positive diagnosis, and the space will be sanitized.

Q: How will you make sure worship over Zoom is a safe, family friendly experience?
A: Some of you may have experienced the Zoom bombing phenomenon which began last spring. Zoom bombing happens when a stranger joins a meeting with the purpose of disrupting it. Groups that get Zoom bombed tend to make themselves vulnerable in the following ways:

  • Host uses a Personal Meeting ID.
  • Meeting is set up without a password.
  • Meeting ID, password, or link to join are posted on a public page (website, Facebook, etc).
  • Meeting uses the same Meeting ID and password every week (called a recurring meeting).
  • Host has the waiting room feature turned off.
  • Screen share and group chat are enabled for all participants.
  • There is no co-host to monitor meeting entrants or manage disruptions.
  • Zoom account is set up with a weak or duplicate password.

Peace Lutheran Church will take the following precautions to provide a safe, family friendly experience:

  • We will not use a Personal Meeting ID.
  • Every meeting will be password protected.
  • The Meeting ID and password will only be distributed using the Prints of Peace email list. Congregation members are welcome to share the information with trusted family, friends, and neighbors as an invitation to worship.
  • A new Meeting ID and password will be provided every week (no recurring meetings).
  • All participants will enter the meeting through the virtual waiting room.
  • Screen share and chat will be disabled for meeting participants.
  • A co-host will monitor the meeting entrants and manage disruptions.
  • If a participant is kicked out of the meeting they will not be allowed to rejoin.
  • The host Zoom account will be set up with a strong, original password.

Q: Why are we moving worship from YouTube to Zoom?
A: Zoom allows for two way communication instead of a one way broadcast. The goals of this service include but are not limited to:
  • Providing flexibility in how God gathers us together as the church (in-person, landline, video call).
  • Lifting up the gifts of readers and assisting ministers, especially those who are not comfortable leading worship in person during the pandemic.
  • Empowering the priesthood of all believers to minister to one another at a time when social distancing and isolation are putting many at increased risk of anxiety, depression, and other mental or spiritual distress.
  • To strengthen the sense of connection and community that draws us to Peace.

Q: What can I expect from a service conducted over Zoom?
A: A service over Zoom is an authentic expression of Christian community, not a professional broadcast. Participants will have more autonomy and more opportunities to interact during this service. Worship will be a live event, and all music will be pre-recorded. Worship leaders and in-person participants will be masked. However, this will not have a significant impact on the quality of the sound due to the use of bluetooth lapel mics.

Q: What are your expectations of families with children?
A: Gathering over Zoom feels different for everyone than gathering in person does. Children’s attention spans or interest in worship in any digital format will not be the same as it might be in person. That said, Zoom will provide children with an opportunity to interact during the Children’s Word. All participants will be muted during the liturgy unless reading, assisting, or passing the peace.

Q: Who can access the service over Zoom?
A: The service will be accessible to every member at Peace. The community gathered through Zoom will be projected on the walls of the sanctuary when there is an in-person gathering. Participants can join worship over Zoom using computer, smart phone, tablet, and landline. Anyone who can make a phone call can easily join a worship service over Zoom.

Q: Do I have to come in person if I want to assist or read?
A: No. Zoom allows readers and assisting ministers the flexibility to lead from anywhere.

Q: Will I still be able to watch the service later if I can’t log-in on Sunday morning?
A: Yes. Every service will be recorded and posted to YouTube.

PASTOR DANIEL’S OFFICE HOURS

Pastor Daniel will be in the office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. He will work remotely on Thursdays and Saturdays. He is available for appointments at the following times each week:

Wednesday 10:00 - 11:00 a.m, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m
Thursday 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. (remote)
Friday 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

He is also available at other times if needed. Please call in advance to schedule an appointment.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Pastor Daniel, Amanda, Ethan, and Adam would like to kick-start the weekend with you in a family friendly virtual happy hour! Sign up for a 5:00 p.m. Friday time slot online by clicking here. Prepare your own appetizers and drinks at home. Then enjoy them with 30 minutes of good conversation over Zoom, FaceTime, or landline!

A NOTE FROM PASTOR DANIEL
Friends in Christ,
Thank you for blessing my family with four weeks of parenting leave. Thank you for your prayers during this preganancy’s complications, and thank you for reaching out to help lighten our load with your gifts. I am deeply grateful for the grace we encountered through you, and I am excited to be back as we begin this new chapter in our life together. God bless us and keep us in Christian faith and friendship!

In Christ,
Pastor Daniel
TIME AND TALENT SURVEYS

The Members Team is currently emailing surveys regarding your participation in the life of our church. So far, there have been only 29 responses. These surveys are being sent out in spite of Covid-19 in the hope that by this time next year, Covid will be a part of the past and Peace will have returned to full functioning. Team leads will adapt their projects to meet Covid precautions. Please complete your survey as soon as possible. Thanks!

GIFT CARD ORDERS

Gift card orders will be placed on Sunday, November 8 and Dec 6. Outreach will likely need some gift cards around these dates, so look for information on that. If you would like to order for either the food pantry donations or LSSI Christmas donations, this would be a great way to help out both the Outreach group as well as our Youth Group! Gift cards for LSSI need to be ordered this Nov 8, as they are due on December 6.

If you have any questions about ordering, please reach out to Lori Schwartz. Here are some easy steps for you to follow when placing your order: When you are ready to place your order, send Lori Schwartz an email. Please indicate how many of each card you would like.  Please make sure to indicate what denomination of gift card you would like. Some merchants, like Walmart or Target, give you many denominations to choose from - you can order a $100 gift card or 4 $25 gift cards - both costing you the same $100. But, if you are planning on getting them as 4 different gifts, the one card at $100 is not what you want. When you know how much your order is in total, you can mail your check directly to Peace Lutheran with a note in the MEMO indicating Gift Cards. ALL CHECKS SHOULD BE PAYABLE TO PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH. Once the gift cards have arrived, Lori will send you an email letting you know that the cards are in a cooler on her front porch.  Lori will put your gift cards into an envelope with your name on them so you know which cards are yours.  If you have cards that you are ordering for any of the Outreach donations, please put a note on your order so she can pull those and can drop them at church. Lori will get them to the church office in one group - this will save each of you a stop at church.

Please let Lori know if you have any additional questions.  FYI - You can set up your gift cards to come directly out of your bank account (instead of having to write a check and send that in to church).  If you would like to do this, please let Lori Schwartz know.  This option allows you to send ecards to others (children away from home) or get them on your phone as well.

SIGN MINISTRY

Sign Ministry: The Outreach Team is looking for someone to take over coordinating the outdoor sign ministry for 2021.  This involves coming up with messages for the sign and scheduling the volunteers to change the sign message every two weeks or so.  If you are interested or have questions, please contact Sue Koenig.

CARE & CONCERN

We pray for one another: We pray for those who need healing, safety and God’s watchful care.  This week we pray for Mike Wilms, Sherri Juveland, Lizetta Moore, Kim Wilkinson, Kyle, Jan Allen, Rita, Gina Nilsen, Laurie G., and Deacon Tracy Katschke. We also pray for our nation following the general election, all who are affected by the wildfires out west including Wendy Brown and Tamara Alliston Johnson with her family, and we pray for those affected by the hurricanes in the South.

We welcome prayer requests.  Let us remember to lift up our needs, concerns, and joys – and those of others – in our prayer!  Make your prayer request by emailing the church office office@peacelutheranlz.com .

We care for one another: If you have any special needs or know someone who does, reach out to the Caring Tree by contacting Judy Tetour.

The Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study: Women’s Bible Study meets on Wednesday morning in the church at 9:00 am.  We will be reading and discussing the book  “The First Christmas” by Marcus J.  HOW TO GIVE YOUR OFFERING

Thank you!  Thank you as you continue your generous contributions to the virtual offering plate we pass.  Congregation members are using these methods:  Mailing their check to church / Using their own bank website “send-payment” feature / Going to www.peacelutheranlz.com and clicking on “make a donation” / or, downloading and using the app we recommend: https://www.vancopayments.com/egiving/church-app

 YOUTH

NOVEMBER VIRTUAL SUNDAY SCHOOL:  Lessons are scheduled from 9:15-9:45 on November 1 & 15.  Please have lesson materials ready before logging in. Future Sunday school lessons will take place on the first and third Sundays of the month with a meeting link sent on the Saturday prior to the lesson.  Contact Liz (Lhopman@comcast.net) or Natalie (natalie1234@att.net) with any questions.

YOUTH DIRECTOR MEDICAL LEAVE: Tracy will be out of the office for hip replacement surgery starting Thursday, November 5th-Sunday, November 15th. During her absence, Triple D and the High School Youth Group will not be meeting. Confirmation on Wednesday, November 11th will be led by Pastor Daniel. Upon her return, both programs will be held virtually for a time while Tracy recovers. Triple D will meet next on Sunday, November 22nd from 11:30am-12:30pm via Zoom. Senior High Youth Group will also meet on Sunday, November 22nd from 1-2pm also via Zoom. Of course, while Tracy is out and recovering, you can absolutely send cards and well wishes to her home!

CONFIRMATION IS BACK IN FULL SWING!: The Peace Lutheran Confirmation Class has started for the fall! Confirmation will be conducted virtually on Wednesdays from 7-7:50pm. Our virtual class time will consist of highs and lows, 1-2 lesson discussions/activities and, of course, a GAME! Tracy will send out the Wednesday Zoom link, as well as the 5-10 minute lesson video, to families on the Tuesday before our Wednesday class. Depending on comfort levels and the pandemic, we will decide as January 2021 gets closer as to whether to continue with only a virtual option.
SOCIAL OUTREACH

Operation Warm collection will be ending - please donate soon:  Operation Warm Donations - We are collecting donations again this year. $20 provides a new coat to a child in need. Donations can be made on-line  at:  https://give.operationwarm.org/campaign/the-lake-zurich-area-coats-for-kids-2020-21/c285374 Credit your donation to our fundraising team by typing in Peace Church Lake Zurich! Operation Warm Volunteers - This year’s coat distribution will occur on 11/14/20 and will be a drive up event. Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up here:
https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/30e0f4dada822a2fb6-operation

Gift Cards:  The holidays will soon be upon us and with that, we like to think of the many ways we can reach out to support individuals in need.  Instead of collecting Christmas gifts for the children served by LSSI (Lutheran Social Services of Illinois), we will be collecting gift cards from Target and Walmart.  We will also be collecting gift cards for the St. Francis de Sales Food Pantry for Jewel, Aldi or Walmart.  These gift cards can be of any amount.  There will be a small box in the church office that you can personally drop off any donation cards you would like to do.  Just put the gift card in an envelope and indicate which program (LSSI or Food Pantry) you would like to support.  You can make your gift card money go even further by purchasing cards through our church.  Lori Schwartz will be ordering cards on Nov. 8 and the youth program will get a percentage back from purchases ordered through her.  You can let her know directly if your cards are for the Outreach Program and she will see that those are delivered to church.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Coins for Change: Mark your calendar now for Saturday, Nov. 7 from 10-2pm.  As we have done in the past, we are collecting coins (and dollars) to help with PADS (Homeless Services) in Lake County.  Here is how we are going to do it:  Find all those coins that you have been collecting at home, on top of your dresser, in your car, or purse, etc. and bring them to Peace.  We will have confirmation students (getting in some service hours!) and an adult in the parking lot.  You can just drive up and we will be wearing our masks and will happily collect whatever you can bring.  The money we collect will be converted into gift cards for PADS. If you have any questions, please call Sue Koenig.  If you have coins but can't make that day, please call Sue and she will pick up any donations at your home.

PADS: During normal times, PADS would be operating its homeless shelters from October - April. We would be bringing food or donations to Messiah Lutheran Church and doing their laundry to help out.  Currently, PADS is not operating any of their shelters. They are putting people up in hotels and working with them to find long-term housing solutions. Our Coins for Change program will continue to support this much needed organization.

Next Mobile Food Pantry: Mark your calendars for the next mobile food pantry that will be held at the Chapel in Lake Zurich on Nov. 7 from 10-11:30am.  If you need food or know someone who does, please plan to attend.

Mission Projects Day: For more than a decade we have been holding Mission Projects Day the first Saturday of February. We have braced all kinds of crazy weather in the past but we think this year's pandemic will create the biggest challenges yet.. But we are not going to let that stop us in our efforts to create an opportunity for many people to do good by providing service to others and to demonstrate the caring attitude that we have here at Peace. Many people have already volunteered to put together kits (baby kits, health kits and school kits for Lutheran World Relief just to name a few!). We have had a very active group of bandage rollers for Global Health Ministries that have already completed hundreds of bandage rolls. We have more kits ready if you would like to take part! If you would like to assemble kits please contact Sue Koenig and a drop off/pickup will be arranged. Other service projects that can now be started are preparing fleece and tying it into blankets and making cards for children in the hospital. If you would prefer to donate items, we are especially in need of single subject spiral notebooks and bath-sized bars of Ivory soap. Thank you!

TEACH THE PASTOR!!! What does the life of faith look like for you during a global pandemic? What does it mean for you and your family to be part of Peace Lutheran Church at this time? Where do you hear God’s Spirit calling us to go as the body of Christ at this time?

A NOTE FROM PASTOR DANIEL

SPECIAL NOTICE - Reimagining Worship

Reimagining Community
Imagine a worship service where you can see the faces and hear the voices of your friends. Now imagine a service where you can pass the peace without worrying about aerosols and physical contact. Then, imagine a service where you can take an active role reading and assisting. Does such a service sound too good to be true? Join us over Zoom for worship beginning Sunday, November 15 and find out!

Reimagining Liturgy
What can you do when even the simplest task seems to demand a dozen extra steps and precautions? Simplify! Advent is the season of simplicity where God separates the spiritual clutter from our lives and prepares us to encounter the Word in a fresh way. On Sunday, November 15, we will pilot a simplified liturgy loosely based on the ancient pattern for personal prayer (a psalm, a reading, and our prayerful response). This shortened liturgy will emphasize God’s living Word as he encounters us through scripture and preaching.

Reimagining Gathering
Beginning Sunday, November 15, Peace will open the digital world to in-person gatherings. These gatherings will be governed by the safety protocols outlined in Peace’s reopening documents. Current state, local, and synodical recommendations are also guiding Peace’s preparations. The service will be accessible over Zoom for all who wish to gather digitally. A recording will be available on YouTube a few hours later. Stay tuned for more information on reserving your seat in the sanctuary!

Operation Warm:  Operation Warm Donations - We are collecting donations again this year.

Thank you!

Worship
Join us virtually for Holy Communion on Sunday, October 25. Please note that we will be sharing communion in the same manner (bread only) whether celebrating at Peace on Saturday or at home on Sunday as an expression of unity around the Lord’s Table. Watch your email on Sunday morning for the link to the YouTube video and script to join in worship, or find it online at www.peacelutheranlz.com.   As we worship in-our-own-homes this Sunday, know that all are invited to the banquet!  Rejoice in the Lord!.

Adult Ed:  Meets Sunday at 10:00 a.m.  Don’t Know Much about...the Parables! Have you ever wondered what Jesus was REALLY talking about in some of His parables? Come find out and learn more about Jesus’ most popular method of teaching! During virtual coffee hour (10am-11am) on 10/25, all are welcome to join Tracy as we journey into the world of Jesus. We’ll take a look at some of Jesus’ most popular, as well as lesser known, parables to explore the context of Jesus’ teaching as well as how these lessons can be applied to us today. Please let Tracy know if you have any questions.

SPECIAL NOTICE - Returning to the Sanctuary

In last week’s Confirmation class, our teens learned and discussed the stories of Abraham and Sarah, as well as Isaac and Rebekah. Both lessons speak of God’s promise - that God will be with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah wherever they go. In return, God asks them to TRUST. With their trust, God will show not only Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah - but ALL of us - that we are safe, blessed, loved and united as children of God. Being reminded that we are loved and united by God was so important then and it continues to be now during this pandemic, as we continue to navigate the unknown.

With the weather turning colder, the virtual worship planning team, COVID-19 task force and PPC have been working on a plan to return to in-person worship. Their discussions continue to take existing recommendations, guidelines and best practices into account - while also making sure that our worship service feeds and unites our beloved congregation. Our team is in the process of creating a worship experience that is similar to an ancient form of prayer - the morning prayer service. This service of the Word, which is traditionally seen as a way to listen to and for God, will consist of one hymn, one Scripture reading, a sermon and prayers. The service of the Word is considered to be a form of worship that can be taken “wherever you go” - and such will be the case for the Peace congregation as both in-person and virtual experiences will be offered.

Our teams are looking to begin the in-person and virtual morning prayer service at the beginning of the season of Advent. The season of Advent presents us with the perfect time - not only is it the “beginning” of the church year, but Advent also represents a time of change, a time of rediscovery, a time when the Word became flesh - with the coming of Jesus. Advent is also a time when we will be reminded that we are united in hope - in person, virtually and most of all, as beloved children of God.
TIME AND TALENT SURVEYS
Members’ team is currently emailing surveys regarding your participation in the life of our church.
Gift card orders will be placed on Sunday Dec 6. Outreach will likely need some gift cards around these dates, so look for information on that. If you would like to order for either the food pantry donations or LSSI Christmas donations, this would be a great way to help out both the Outreach group as well as our Youth Group!

This week we pray for Mike Wilms, Sherri Juveland, Lizetta Moore, Kim Wilkinson, Kyle, Randy Bounds, Jan Allen, Margaret Sherman, Rita, Matthew Vehrs, Carol Sullivan and Gina Nilsen. We also pray for all who are affected by the wildfires out west including Wendy Brown and Tamara Alliston Johnson with her family, and we pray for those affected by the hurricanes in the South.

PASTOR’S PATERNAL LEAVE

Pastor Daniel will begin paternal leave Friday, September 25 and return Tuesday, October 27. Deacon Tracy Katschke will be on call to respond to emergencies and provide spiritual care. She can be reached on her cell phone (630.202.9834).

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Pandemic got you down? Join Pastor Daniel, Amanda, and Ethan for a virtual happy hour starting in November! Prepare your own appetizers and drinks at home. Then enjoy them with 30 minutes of good conversation and toddler antics over Zoom! Check back in November for sign-up information.
FELLOWSHIP

Our Playground has Reopened: We are following the protocols being used by the LZ Parks and Recreation department, which is basically playing at your own risk. Based on information from the CDC and IPDH, the virus is killed by UV rays from the sun, so there is no need to sanitize the playground.  We ask parents to monitor their kids while they play on the playground. Try to keep social distancing between children of different families. Kids should be wearing masks if more than one family is on the playground.  At this time we are not reopening the Music Wall or the basketball hoop since it is impossible to social distance while doing both of those activities.

Wine Women and Weeding:  Come on over, and as we chat and weed, have a sip of wine and enjoy each other’s company.  Every Wednesday at 5:00 at the Labyrinth.

Brewing Questions is Back!: It's been a while since we have gathered for Brewing Questions, so let's do so....over Zoom! Everyone is welcome to join in for some great conversation, laughs and, of course, bring your beverage of choice. Our next Brewing Questions meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 18th at 6pm! If you are interested, please visit the virtual gathering section on PLC website home page for the Zoom link!

‘Secret Sister’ Update:  We will be moving our Secret Sister Reveal into the fall.  In the meantime, it is always good to pray and we hope you have kept your “Secret Sister” in your daily prayers. We would encourage you to use the old fashioned letter with a stamp to send a warm thought to your secret sister on a monthly basis or if you live close, you can drop them off a goodie in their mailbox. They may have guessed who you were, but if not, the fun will continue!  At this time, if you pop in the church, please do not post any new notes on the bulletin board as it is not actively being monitored. Please reach out to Sherri Juveland and Sandy Hanna with any questions.  Stay safe and enjoy these fall days!

HALLOWEEN FUN FOR YOUTH & TRIPLE D!: All are welcome to join our Youth Group & Triple D Bible Study for some Halloween fun on Sunday, October 25th from 11:30am-1pm! We will be carving pumpkins, playing some Halloween games and, best of all, having some fun! Tracy will be bringing pumpkins, so please let her know if your teen will be attending so they have a pumpkin to carve. All participants must bring their own carving tools and, of course, wear a mask.

CONFIRMATION IS BACK IN FULL SWING!: The Peace Lutheran Confirmation Class has started for the fall! Confirmation will be conducted virtually on Wednesdays from 7-7:50pm. Mission Projects Day: Currently Mission Projects Day is scheduled for February 6, 2021.  We recognize that we will likely still be operating under significant restrictions but we really feel called to continue this awesome opportunity for all people of Peace to engage in fellowship and in service to others.  In light of that, we have decided that we will start some of the projects prior to February and will get started on them now. The first to roll out is making bandages for Global Health Ministries.  You will get a rolling jig, plenty of strips, and tape.  All you have to do is roll! It is an easy project to do while talking to others or watching a movie or football game.  It is great for students looking for service hours.  We will also be making pillows for hospice, paracord bracelets for Operation Gratitude for service members and cards for kids in the hospital. .If you can help with anything, please call or email Sue Koenig and she will get you the supplies you need.

Culver’s update: Thank you to all who participated in the Culver’s fundraiser on October 5. It is very generous of them to support groups like ours in this uncertain economic time. They will be sending us a check for $48 that will go towards mission trips. Thank you Culver’s of Lake Zurich!

Saturday: What to expect for in-person communion
Christ offers us his real presence in a multitude of ways, and in a plurality of places! In communion, however, his presence to us and for us is made so very clear. We will celebrate communion in a manner in which you can be assured you will receive the full blessing of the sacrament, and also safely participate in the midst of the current pandemic. Please note that we will be sharing communion in the same manner (bread only) whether celebrating at Peace on Saturday or at home on Sunday as an expression of unity around the Lord’s Table.

We ask that you bring bread from home
Prepare to bring a small portion of bread for you and your household. Carry it sealed with you to worship. In the communion service you will be invited to take it out, unwrap and hold it up during the prayer of consecration, and eat. Uneaten bread should return home with you to be consumed there. The cup while consecrated will not be served. This is in keeping with the tradition (may be unusual to us in modern times) of receiving communion in one kind (bread) instead of both kinds (bread and wine). We are assured in either manner that Christ gives himself fully to us and for us for the forgiveness of our sins, and sends us out to share his love with the world. In case you forget to bring bread, a limited number of individually wrapped gluten-free wafers will be available.

Protocols to be respected at in-person worship:
Please note the following protocols to be respected for all who are in attendance:
  • Facial coverings required at all times on church property, both outside and inside
  • Social distancing between families
  • Bring your own chairs or blankets
  • If inclement weather, you will be notified by telephone with a postcall, email and website message

THIS SUNDAY
Worship
Join us virtually for Holy Communion on Sunday, October 11.

During virtual coffee hour (10am-11am) on 10/11 & 10/25, all are welcome to join Tracy as we journey into the world of Jesus.

The virtual worship planning team and the COVID-19 Task Force are beginning preparations for our return to the sanctuary following Pastor Daniel’s paternal leave! Planning will take existing recommendations, guidelines and best practices into account. While no date has been set, we are hoping to resume indoor services by Advent or sooner. Services will continue to be made available online for all who wish to continue gathering virtually. The PPC, the virtual worship planning team, and the COVID-19 Task Force will keep the congregation informed through a variety of outlets as plans develop.
TIME AND TALENT SURVEYS
It’s that time of year! The Members Team is emailing the Time & Talent surveys this week. Please complete by Monday, October 19th. Those of you without email addresses will have the sheets mailed to your homes. Thank you!
SIGN MINISTRY
Sign Ministry-The Outreach Team is looking for someone to take over coordinating the sign ministry for 2021.  This involves coming up with messages for the sign and scheduling the volunteers to change the sign message every two weeks or so.  If you are interested or have questions, please contact Sue Koenig.
CARE & CONCERN
We pray for one another: We pray for those who need healing, safety and God’s watchful care.  This week we pray for Mike Wilms, Sherri Juveland, Lizetta Moore, Amanda Morris, Kim Wilkinson, Kyle, Randy Bounds, Jan Allen, Margaret Sherman, Rita, and Matthew Vehrs. We also pray for all who are affected by the wildfires out west including Wendy Brown and Tamara Alliston Johnson with her family, and we pray for those affected by the hurricanes in the South.

We welcome prayer requests.  Let us remember to life up our needs, concerns, and joys – and those of others – in our prayer!  Make your prayer request by emailing the church office office@peacelutheranlz.com .

We care for one another: If you have any special needs or know someone who does, reach out to the Caring Tree by contacting Judy Tetour.

Try to keep social distancing between kids of different families. Kids should be wearing masks if more than one family is on the playground.  At this time we are not reopening the Music Wall or the basketball hoop since it is pretty impossible to social distance while doing both of those activities.

Wine Women and Weeding:  Come on over, and as we chat, weed, have a sip of wine and enjoy each other’s company.  Every Wednesday at 6:00 at the Labyrinth.

Brewing Questions is Back!: It's been a while since we have gathered for Brewing Questions, so let's do so....over Zoom! Everyone is welcome to join in for some great conversation, laughs and, of course, bring your beverage of choice. Our next Brewing Questions meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 14th at 6pm!

THIS WEEKEND
Saturday Outdoor Service of Affirmation of Baptism and Holy Communion: During our outdoor worship on Saturday, September 26th at 6pm, our congregation will be celebrating the Affirmation of Baptism for our 2020 Confirmands: Jocelyn and Anna! Please join us to celebrate this amazing accomplishment, as well as enjoy an individually wrapped cupcake from Small Cakes. We will conclude worship with a cupcake toast of our Confirmands! We will gather in accordance with all required safety protocols (see below).

Worship
Join us virtually for a Service of Affirmation of Baptism and Holy Communion on Sunday, September 27.

Adult Ed:  Sunday, 10:00 a.m.
Don’t Know Much about...the Parables! Have you ever wondered what Jesus was REALLY talking about in some of His parables? Come find out and learn more about Jesus’ most popular method of teaching! During virtual coffee hour (10am-11am) on 9/27, 10/11 & 10/25, all are welcome to join Tracy as we journey into the world of Jesus.

The virtual worship planning team and the COVID-19 Task Force are beginning preparations for our return to the sanctuary following Pastor Daniel’s paternal leave! Planning will take existing recommendations, guidelines, and best practices into account.

CARE & CONCERN
We pray for one another: We pray for those who need healing, safety and God’s watchful care.  This week we pray for Mike Wilms, Sherri Juveland, Mike Tetour, Brad Baker, Lizetta Moore, Amanda Morris, Kim Wilkinson, Kyle, Randy Bounds, Jan Allen, Margaret Sherman, Rita, and Matthew Vehrs.

FELLOWSHIP
Peace Lutheran Quilters: we will meet on Saturday, September 26th in the church (Outside if weather permits) at 9:00 am.  We will be putting together our rainbow quilt for LWR (if all the blocks are done) and we will be looking at future projects Please bring your suggestions!
Our playground has reopened.  We are following the protocols being used by the LZ Parks and Recreation department, which is basically playing at your own risk. Based on information from the CDC and IPDH, the virus is killed by UV rays from the sun, so there is no need to sanitize the playground.  We ask parents to monitor their kids while they play on the playground. Try to keep social distancing between kids of different families. Kids should be wearing masks if more than one family is on the playground.  At this time we are not reopening the Music Wall or the basketball hoop.  It is pretty impossible to social distance while doing both of those activities.
Wine Women and Weeding.  Come on over, and as we chat, weed, have a sip of wine and enjoy each other’s company.

- GOD'S WORK, OUR HANDS MONTH OF SERVICE!: In honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, the Metro Chicago Synod participates in God Work, Our Hands Sunday every year. God's Work, Our Hands usually falls on the Sunday closest to September 11th. On this day, congregations from around the country participate in a day of service - cleaning up neighborhoods, serving at food pantries, painting schools, etc. However, with the pandemic, serving in a group is not feasible. Tracy, our Youth Director, has put together a God's Work, Our Hands calendar with a FULL month of service opportunities that can be done as a family or individually - all from home! Try to complete one of these tasks each day!!

FOR ALL PARISHIONERS:
SOCIAL OUTREACH
Operation Warm:  Operation Warm Donations - We are collecting donations again this year.

Culver's Fundraiser for Adult and Youth Mission Trips:  Culver's has resumed offering non-profits the chance to earn money for their projects.  On Monday, October 5th at the Lake Zurich Culvers, they will give Peace 15% of all sales that bring or mention the below flyer.  This is good for drive-thru and carryout only.  The money that we receive will be split between the adult and youth trips.  Please support a local business that has been so generous to our mission trips in the past!

THIS WEEKEND
Worship
We welcome you to worship outside on Saturday, September 12, at 6:00pm.  Communion will be celebrated at this worship service. We will have a specia Rally Dayl blessing celebrating Peace’s ministries! We will gather in accordance with all required safety protocols (see below).

Virtual Coffee Hour/Adult Ed:  Sunday, 10:00 a.m.

Peace Lutheran Church Face Mask Policy for Covid-19 phases 3 and 4:

A face mask must be worn by all persons age 2 and up:
  1.  when entering the church building for any period of time
  2.  when the church gathers for worship for indoor and outdoor services

This face mask policy applies to all church clergy, staff, members and visitors.  The only exception applies to church clergy and staff who may choose to take their face mask off when they are 1) in their office AND 2) they are alone AND 3) their door is closed.

A face mask, worn properly, must cover your mouth and nose at all times.

FELLOWSHIP
Every Wednesday at 6:00 at the Labyrinth.
Brewing Questions is Back!: It's been a while since we have gathered for Brewing Questions, so let's do so....over Zoom! ‘Secret Sister’ Update:  We will be moving our Secret Sister Reveal until early fall. Stay safe and enjoy these summer days!

All colored butterflies will then be given to Tracy to be displayed on the glass doors of church! Please consider coloring one - or more - of the butterflies provided below! Both links are printer friendly and we can't wait to "soar" into fall programming together!

Feed My Starving Children update: Peace has supported this ministry that is dedicated to providing nutritious meals for children worldwide for many years.  Because of Covid-19, their packing operations have been dramatically impacted while the need for food has grown enormously with hundreds of thousands facing the possibility of starvation. Reservations for small groups are now being taken at their packing facilities with the following new rules:

·       volunteer group size is limited to five people.  You will not be socially distanced from anyone you choose to sign up with.  You will be socially distanced from other groups in the packing room.
·       if you or anyone in your groups develops symptoms while packing, you and your entire group will be asked to leave immediately.
·       the packing setup has been changed to accommodate groups ranging in size from 1-5
·       the minimum volunteer age has been temporarily increased to age 10
·       if you are in a high risk category, please stay home
·       a reservation is required to pack
Although we will not be having a general signup for congregation members at this time, please consider having your small family group sign-up to serve. The need is great.  Go to www.fmsc.org to sign up.  Thank you!

Lutheran World Relief Update:  Another ministry that Peace has been a strong supporter of is Lutheran World Relief.  Each February, at our annual Mission Projects Day, we have made baby kits, school kits, health kits, fleece blankets and quilts for this organization.  On August 6th, in the devastating port explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, more than 150 people lost their lives, more than 5000 were injured and about 300,000 people are without shelter. Further impacting people in need, 3 40-ft shipping containers that were filled with humanitarian aid were also destroyed.  This shipment included 22,000 handmade quilts and baby kits, health kits and school supplies that were to go to refugees living in Lebanon.  The need is now greater than ever.  We are planning to have Mission Day on Feb. 6 at Peace in some capacity depending on the social gathering restrictions that are in place at that time.  If you would like to help now, please consider making a donation online to https://lwr.org/beirut or mail your donation to Lutheran World Relief, PO Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21297-1061.  If you would like to purchase items that we can use in school kits, baby kits or health kits, please contact Sue Koenig or see the LWR.org site to see a supply list.  If you are interested in making a quilt top and need squares to sew together, also contact Sue Koenig.  Thank you for your help!
