EMMAUS EVENING PRAYER
Worship and Dinner
The service will be available on YouTube at 5:00 p.m. Dinner follows the service.

Emmaus style evening prayer takes its name from a story found in Luke 24:13-35 when the risen Christ travels to Emmaus with two unwitting disciples on the day of his resurrection (Sunday). On the road he opens the scriptures to them, causing their hearts to burn within them, and his true identity is finally revealed to them in the breaking of bread at the evening meal. This service uses the liturgy for Holden Evening Prayer. It is intended to be followed by a meal around the dinner table. Consider making your table special by adding a table cloth, using your most festive dinnerware, and/or lighting a candle. Also consider sharing this meal with someone over the phone, especially if you live alone. Watch your email on Sunday afternoon for the link to the YouTube video, or find it online at www.peacelutheranlz.com.

Starting this Sunday, February 7, we will add a bi-monthly in-person component to our Sunday morning Zoom service. In-person gatherings will take place every other Sunday. Current guidance recommends limiting the time of in-person gatherings, especially in light of the more contagious viral variants taking hold in the States. Sundays with an in-person component will be patterned on the abbreviated Service of the Word that was introduced in Advent while the remaining Sundays will continue as all-church celebrations of Holy Communion over Zoom. If you are interested in attending an in-person service, you need to call the church office between Tuesday and Thursday the week prior to service (between  2/2-2/5 for the first service) and speak with Allison. The cut off for registration is 11:00am on Thursday. You are not guaranteed a reserved seat unless you have confirmation from Allison. We are limited in our capacity to 2-3 households (depending on the size of the household), so if you are interested and the service is full, there is a possibility you can be added to the reservations for the following in-person service, and similarly, if you attended a service once during the month you may be waitlisted for the following service to ensure that all who are interested in attending are able to do so.  As always, we will be following best practice mitigation strategies- everyone will need to self-certify that they are symptom free at home, and then be screened again at church. Masks will be required at all times in the building, and we request that you arrive at least 10 minutes prior to service so that screening and seating can take place without delaying the start of worship. A list of mitigations and procedures will be sent to you after your reservation is confirmed. Please contact Bridget Heroff, Bill Koenig, or Pastor Daniel for more information.

2021 GIVING ENVELOPES
2021 Giving Envelopes are available for pick up now.  They are on a table in the narthex and can be picked up during office hours: Tuesday and Thursday 9 - 1.  If this does not work for you, please contact Mark Dice at 847-971-4817.

SIGN MINISTRY
Sign Ministry: The Outreach Team is looking for someone to take over coordinating the outdoor sign ministry for 2021.  This involves coming up with messages for the sign and scheduling the volunteers to change the sign message every two weeks or so.  If you are interested or have questions, please contact Sue Koenig.

FELLOWSHIP
Quilting:  The plans for the mystery quilt are complete.  We are thinking summer and the quilt (wall hanging size) will sharpen our appliqué skills.  If you would like to join us, please contact Carol Wojnarowski at jctmw@yahoo.com  to receive the details.

FAITH FORMATION UPDATES
For Families with Children:
Each Sunday you can access the Children’s Bulletin with activities that enable families to worship together and learn from each week’s Scripture theme. You will find them at the end of your Thursday email for worship.

Join your Sunday School friends on February 7 & 21 from 10:00-10:30 to complete our study the Lord’s Prayer.  Future Sunday School lessons will take place on the first and third Sundays of the month with a meeting link sent on the Saturday prior to the lesson. Contact Liz (Lhopman@comcast.net) or Natalie (natalie1234@att.net) with any questions.

For adults:
Adult Forum: Join us this Sunday as we explore the parable of the mustard seed!

The Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study:  The women’s Bible study began a new book on January 13th titled “Consider the Women” by Debbie Blue.  We will be reading about three matriarchs of the Bible:  Hagar, Esther and Mary.  Read with us as Debbie Blue looks into the background of these women, how they preserved and showed their faith.  We meet via zoom on Wednesday morning at 9 am.  For more information you can contact Carol Wojnarowski.

YOUTH UPDATES

IT’S SOUPER BOWL TIME!: The Souper Bowl is HERE! TODAY, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH FROM 10AM-12PM, our Confirmation and Senior High Youth will be collecting non-perishable food items for our neighbors at St. Francis Food Pantry.  Don’t forget: we’re also going to have a bit of a “competition” and see who can collect more – our regular 8am churchgoers OR our regular 10:30 churchgoers!  Donations can be “marked” with “8am” or “10:30am” at drop-off.  Let the games begin!

SAVE THE DATE - HS MISSION TRIP INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON FEB. 14TH!: A LOT of GREAT questions have been raised by teen families in the past week regarding the upcoming HS Mission Trip to Boston - particularly around cost, COVID and alternative options. Tracy feels that it is important to address everyone’s concerns, as well as decide as a group whether an “at home” mission trip would be the best option this year. All teen families are welcome to attend the HS Mission Trip Informational Zoom on Sunday, February 14th from 11:30am-12:15pm. Tracy has sent the Zoom information to all teen families - please let Tracy know if you have not received the Zoom link OR if you have any questions!

SOCIAL OUTREACH UPDATES

Mission Projects Season: We are looking for volunteers in February to help deliver and/or mail packages to the various organizations that we have completed projects for during this mission projects season. Most of the boxes will need to be taken to Elgin to Church of the Brethren.  Some of these boxes are a bit large and heavy but will not require postage.  Some boxes will need to be mailed/shipped to Minnesota and California.  There is no money set aside for this so this would have to be a donation on the part of the person doing the mailing/shipping.  Please let Sue Koenig know if you can help with this important part of this ministry.

Mission Projects Day totals!:
  • For LWR:  10 quilts, 136 health kits, 57 baby kits, and 128 school kits were made.
  • For global health ministries: 990 bandages were rolled
  • For Project Linus: 33 quilts and blankets were sewn
  • For journey care hospice: 118 comfort pillows were made
  • For Domus Pacis family respite: 24 potholders were made
  • For Operation  Gratitude: Close to 300 paracord survival bracelets were made
  • For Cards For Hospitalized Kids:  Numerous cards created!
Adult Mission Trip 2021 Update:  We have made plans to go to Omaha Nebraska for our adult mission trip this year.  The dates are August 15-21, 2021.  This area was hit by devastating flooding in March 2019 when there was rapid snow melt followed by significant rainfall that caused the Missouri River to flood and breach a dam.  Because of the pandemic, many people are still waiting for assistance to help rebuild their homes.  This trip is open to all adults, 18 years old and older.  You do not need to have any special construction skills, just a willingness to serve.  We will be working with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to do our trip safely as we all recover from the covid pandemic.  There are only 20 spaces available for our entire group.  The cost has not yet been determined but there will be scholarship money available to those who need it.  Please let Sue Koenig know if you have any questions or are interested in being a part of this service opportunity.
