Important Notice Regarding Mail Concerns
Hello Members of Peace,
It has been brought to our attention that someone has been targeting church mailboxes in Lake Zurich and surrounding areas. We have reason to believe that Peace Lutheran Church was a target. Members have reported their offerings sent by mail have not been reflected in their giving statements. As a precaution, we are holding all mail at the post office until further notice. We need your help in determining if your offerings have been received. Please confirm that your offering checks are reflected properly on your giving statements. You may also consider reviewing your cancelled checks for endorsement anomalies. It is possible that commitment cards may have been taken and discarded as well. Please reach out to our finance team to confirm that your November and December offerings have been received along with your 2021 commitments. Mark Dice (email@example.com) and Ryan Zicco (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Thank you for your support and all you do for our church.
Jason Fralish – PPC President
CARE & CONCERN
We pray for one another: We pray for those who need healing, safety and God’s watchful care. This week we pray for Mike Wilms, Sherri Juveland, Lizetta Moore, Kim Wilkinson, Kyle, Gina Nilsen, Laurie G., Deacon Tracy Katschke, Jeff Peterson, Chris Mitchell, Don Brown, Douglas Brown, William (Hoyt) Brown, and Bruce Hodkinson.
NEW WORSHIP SCHEDULE COMING 2021
Thank you for helping us hear your voice with the Worship Team survey! After reviewing the results, the PPC determined that we will move into the new year with one Sunday service over Zoom at 9:00 a.m. followed by a fellowship/education hour. We will also be offering an Emmaus service on YouTube at 5:00 p.m. The COVID Team will continue checking in regularly in hopes of opening the sanctuary to limited, in-person gatherings as soon as possible. The new worship schedule will begin Sunday, January 3. Please note it will take a couple weeks for the Virtual Worship Planning Team to create content for the new Emmaus service. In the meantime, guidance for observing an Emmaus service will be provided in the January newsletter, and the morning service will be available on YouTube by 5:00 p.m. every Sunday.
CHURCH OFFICE CLOSURE
The church office will be closed Friday, January 1 in observance of New Year’s Day.
PASTOR DANIEL OUT OF OFFICE
Pastor Daniel will be out of the office from Friday, December 25 through Monday, January 4. Pastor Sarah Stumme, the Interim Associate Pastor at Atonement Lutheran Church in Barrington, will be on call for pastoral emergencies. Please contact her cell at 224-622-7019.
MEMBERS TEAM UPDATE
Members Team is looking for a volunteer to replace Lin Hodkinson, who is leaving in December. I’m thankful for all her help this past year. This team is responsible for the Prayer Chain, the Caring Tree, the maintenance of church records and the member directory, the tracking of church attendance and time and talent surveys. Anyone interested in helping with this important ministry, please call Jayne Handley
Farewell Bruce and Lin: Bruce and Lin Hodkinson were greeted by many of their Peace friends on Dec. 19 at the drive-thru good-bye event at the Koenigs. Bruce and Lin are headed to southern California sunshine on Jan. 4 to start the next chapter of their lives together. They let us know their new address when it is finalized. We thank Bruce and Lin for more than two decades of service and leadership at Peace with their active involvement in youth mentoring, mission trips, worship assistants and church leadership. Peace will always have a place for you. Be safe and happy!
FAITH FORMATION UPDATES
For Families with Children:
Each Sunday you can access the Children’s Bulletin with activities that enable families to worship together and learn from each week’s Scripture theme. You will find them at the end of your Thursday email for worship.
December Virtual Sunday School: Sunday school will meet on January 3rd at 10:00 (NEW TIME). A link will be sent on the Saturday prior to the class. If you need to pick up the Jan/Feb activity materials, please contact Liz (Lhopman@comcast.net) or Natalie (email@example.com) with any questions.
Adult Forum: will resume on January 10th at 10:00 and continue to explore Jesus’s parables.
The Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study: The women’s Bible study will meet via zoom on Wednesdays at 9 am. On January 6th we will discuss the Bible study in the Gather Magazine and then on January 13th we will be discussing “Consider the Women” by Debbie Blue.
Men of Peace! Looking for a way to connect with other guys in the congregation in our social distanced world? Join us at 8:00 am Saturday mornings at church for men’s Bible Study. And sports. And job stuff. And whatever comes up! Looking forward to seeing new faces we haven’t
seen in a while!
Confirmation Returns!: The Peace Lutheran Confirmation Ministry will begin on Wednesday, January 5th at 7pm! Due to the pandemic and the state’s COVID guidelines, we will continue to meet via Zoom until further notice. Tracy will send out the Zoom invitation to all Confirmation families the day before (on Tuesdays). We will continue to meet every Wednesday until our Lenten break, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17th.
Triple D is BACK!: The popular Confirmation Bible Study, Triple D (donuts, devotions and discussion) will return to it’s biweekly schedule on Sunday, January 10th at 11:30am! We will “kick off” the year with a New Years party and all Confirmands are welcome to join for an hour of fun and laughs! In adherence to our state’s COVID guidelines, we will continue to meet via Zoom until further notice.
Youth Group is Ready to PARTY!: Our Senior High Youth Group returns for 2021 with a New Years party on Sunday, January 10th at 1pm! All are welcome to join us via Zoom for an hour of catching up with each other, games, laughs and of course, FUN! We will also take some time on the 10th to discuss our July mission trip, as well as 2021 service ideas/opportunities!
WE’RE GOING ON A MISSION TRIP!: 2020 brought great disappointment to our Senior High teens and chaperones when our mission trip to Knoxville, Tennessee was cancelled due to COVID-19. I have been working with Next Step Ministries and we WILL have a 2021 mission trip! We are going to Boston, Massachusetts from July 24th-August 1st, 2021!! There are currently 24 spots – 18 spots for teens and 6 spots for chaperones for our trip. All teens from 8th grade through freshmen in college are eligible to attend. The cost for the mission trip will be $400/teen. Unfortunately, the price per teen has increased this year due to the uncertainty of fundraising. Scholarships will be available and Tracy will be working with Pastor Daniel and PPC to figure out safety protocols and options for mission trip fundraisers (the spaghetti dinner could be done “al fresco” this year!) If your teen is interested in attending OR if you are interested in being a chaperone, please let Tracy know by Monday, March 1st. A $100/teen deposit is also due at that time.
THANK YOU!!: Thank you to the Peace Lutheran Congregation for your generous Christmas gift! I so appreciate your thoughtfulness and it is MY pleasure to be a part of such an amazing church family! God’s blessings to all of you!
SOCIAL OUTREACH UPDATES
Generosity at Peace: Thank you one and all who donated to our outreach giving to both LSSI and St. Francis de Sales Food Pantry. We collected $600 in gift cards for LSSI that was used to provide Christmas gifts for children in foster care and in other programs such as children with parents in their Prison Ministry Program. St. Francis de Sales Food Pantry received $835 in gift cards for local grocery stores and a lot of in-kind donations of non-perishable food, paper products and hygiene items. We know that all of these donations helped lift people's spirits during this most difficult of years. Thank you for remembering those in need!
Mission Projects Season update: We are continuing to put together kits and items that typically are done on Mission Projects Day the first Saturday of February. So far, baby kits, health kits and school kits have been assembled. Quilts have been made. Paracord bracelets have been tied. Hundreds of bandages have been rolled! It is not our typical way of doing service for many organizations at once, but we haven't let that stop us! We still have bracelets to be made and cards for hospitalized kids to be created so if you would like to help, please contact Sue Koenig. If you want to make more kits for Lutheran World Relief with your family, check out the LWR.org website for supply lists and directions. Thank you! We will be needing people to deliver the kits to Elgin in February and mail bracelets and bandages. If you can help, please contact Sue. Thank you!
Adult Mission Trip 2021: Currently we are awaiting travel bans to be lifted so we can plan our adult mission trip for this summer, hopefully to a location recovering from a disaster in the midwest. We are hoping to go in mid-late August when people have had a chance to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. Please let Sue Koenig know if you are interested or have any questions or concerns.
