PRINTS OF PEACE – Sunday May 17
IMPORTANT UPDATES – WEEKLY CHANGES Contents (scroll down for each): This Sunday SHARING HOPE AND JOY Care and Concern Faith Formation Now How to give your offering Youth “MAY” YOU HAVE ENOUGH – May emphasis Social Outreach THIS SUNDAY We welcome Rev. John Alan Boryk as our guest speaker in worship this Sunday! Pastor John comes to us as an active member of our sister congregation, Our Saviour's Lutheran in Arlington Heights. In the Peace tradition of sharing "faith journeys,” Pastor John will share some of his faith journey - some transformational moments - that have had a lasting effect on his faith and life, and the mission of the church today. 3 ways to get the worship video link and printable resource each Sunday: a) Look in your email inbox after 7am Sunday morning; b) On the Peace website www.peacelutheran z.com; or c) on the Peace Facebook page. Join in a ‘VIRTUAL COFFEE HOUR’ at 9:15am this Sunday and each Sunday while we are apart. Go to Peace website to get the link www.peacelutheranlz.com. We welcome our guest Rev. John Alan Boryk for some informal conversation. (Come on 5 minutes early if you would like any technical help). Read John 14:15-21 for this Sunday, May 17 and learn of Jesus’ promise for today and hope for tomorrow. Jesus does not abandon his followers. Never did. Never will. He went to the cross, to the depths of human experience, suffering and death, and rose again to stay with us forever. Yes, in the Holy Spirit Jesus abides with his disciples of every generation, and in every season of their lives, in time of success and failure, in times of sickness and times of health. With such a promise, the Spirit of Jesus, dwelling in us and living through us, urges us on to live for the sake of his mission – who loved the world and gave his life for it. SHARING HOPE AND JOY Where have you found joy in reaching out to others while sheltering in place? What is something positive you have learned or tried in your time at home? How has someone showed love towards you or your family? How has your faith changed over these weeks? Please send a picture, video or story of sharing hope and joy. Watch this short video from the peace outreach team: SHARING HOPE AND JOY IN MAY and send your picture, video or story! Write it out, video yourselves or your family, and send it to Anne Blaylock or Sue Koenig or contact them and they will write it up. You never know how a small act of kindness will impact someone else - or you! CARE & CONCERN We pray for one another: We pray for those who need healing and wholeness. Congregation members: If you would like to donate vegetable seeds for the garden, please let Tracy know! “MAY” YOU HAVE ENOUGH PLC Outreach Team works to keep a finger on the pulse of the wider community, people and populations who are particularly stressed or challenged. And we want to make a difference in people’s lives right here in Lake Zurich. Please watch this 2 minute video from your Outreach Team. Can you help? Here are the details: · Kicking off May 3, “MAY You have Enough” · Congregation-wide effort to raise much needed funds for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. · Give whatever financial gifts you are able to give. · Send a check to Peace with “May You Have Enough” in the memo section anytime between May 3-May 31. · Congregation goal of $2000 for the month. · Watch for weekly updates through May on progress to the goal. We know the need for food in our community will continue for months. The Northern Illinois Food Bank supplies food to our local shelters and also gives them funds to purchase those items that are most needed at the lowest possible bulk price. Our expectation is for any family that wants to give (but to not feel any pressure to do so) but can give whatever amount they feel is right. Here are additional ways to help directly in Lake Zurich, if you prefer: Join with District 95 to help families in need. District 95 is providing $20/$25 grocery gift cards to families, providing non-perishable food items, and handing out school supplies like crayons, markers, and pencils to help families with remote learning. If you would like to help families in District 95 in any of these ways, please contact Anne Blaylock . St. Francis and the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry have been very active these past few weeks. On April 2 they had 145 clients pick up groceries curbside. This was up to 45 clients in one week! To help supply food for local people in need, look for the blue donation boxes at St. Francis church and the ministry center in LZ. They are taking non-perishable food, toilet paper, diapers and other paper products. PADS of Lake County: The PADS housing site at Messiah Lutheran Church, and at all churches in Lake County, have been suspended due to the COVID-19. The homeless people are being housed at several motels in the Waukegan area. At this time, their biggest need is for financial assistance, there is also a signup link that offers a range of opportunities so if you are interested check that out at www.padslakecounty.org SOCIAL OUTREACH Lou Malnatis coupons are still available until April 30: We have concluded our sale. The coupons will be mailed to Sue Koenig in the next 2 weeks. Once received, Sue will send them to you with a note on how much much is due. Please send a check to Peace (each coupon is $13). Put Lou Malnati coupon sale on the memo line. We raise $200 to go towards future adult mission trips. There are extra coupons, so if you forgot or would like more please contact Sue. Sew for Lutheran World Relief: School bags need to be made for Mission Projects Day 2021 and this is a perfect time to start sewing them. Just email Sue Koenig if you would like a bag of kits dropped off on your front porch. It's an easy pattern! Update on Feed My Starving Children: Due to safety concerns, Feed My Starving Children has suspended packing events through the end of July for now. We will reschedule our packing session (was scheduled for May) when we are able. Secret Sister Luncheon/Reveal: TBD. Adult Mission Trip: Due to the uncertainty of group gatherings extending into the summer, the decision was made to cancel this summer's trip. For those of you who paid the deposit, you have two options. Please let Sue Koenig or Lynn Marinelli know which of the two you prefer. Your options are 1. Have your $25 deposit put in the scholarship fund for future trips to help those who have a desire to help but can't afford it 2. Have your deposit refunded directly to you. Look for us to come back next year and have another great trip to help a community needing assistance to recover from a natural disaster. Update on masks: Sue Koenig will continue to make masks for anyone who needs one. Just let her know how many are needed (they won't be white as she’s out of that material!). Small Group Helpers: Are you someone who likes to go on mission trips or someone who wants to help others but your time is limited? We are looking to put together small groups of helpers that can help people in our community by doing projects such as lawn care, simple carpentry, some painting or other odd jobs that they might find difficult or that they could just use a little help with. Let Sue or Bill Koenig know if you are interested in helping or would like some assistance with a task. Making Donations to Charities regarding the coronavirus: Please be aware that there are many scammers using fake appeals for people to donate to their charities during this uncertain time. Here are some guidelines from the Federal Trade Commission that you can do to make sure your donations are going where you think it should: 1. Search online for the charity's name and the words "scam or fraud" 2. Review ratings of the charity. 3. Check the charity's registration status with you local charity regulator (are they registered to take donations in your state?) They also suggest: 1. Donating using a credit card. 2. Double checking the name of the organization. 3. Asking a lot of questions. 4. Confirm that your donation will be tax deductible. 5. Don't assume a donation request on social media is legitimate because it was shared.
