Dear Friends in Christ:  Sunday:  This Sunday we consider Jesus’ sayings about the sanctity of marriage. Jesus speaks against the self-righteous religious professionals, and again speaks of becoming like children – as far as their simple trust. Come and hear God’s Word and be fed by Jesus in bread and wine. Adult Education:  This Sunday at 9:15. The theme is confirmation for adults, see below. All are welcome. Pastor Mark will be leading.Reading for this Sunday: Please read Hebrews chapter 1 plus the sidebar notes for this chapter and the introduction to Hebrews in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.)  Hebrews is not really an epistle (letter,) but more of a sermon about Christ and how Christians are to have faith and act on that faith. Hebrews quotes the Old Testament several times to make its point. Please pay attention to the note about Law and Gospel in the introduction to Hebrews. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark.

Worship Schedule: Our worship schedule is the service of Holy Communion at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Reading for Next Week:  Please read Hebrews chapter 4 plus the sidebar notes for this chapter plus the introduction to Hebrews in your Lutheran Study Bible (LSB.) Hebrews is not really an epistle (letter) but more of a sermon about Christ and how Christians are to have faith and act on that faith. In chapter 4, the subject of God’s people (Israel,) sabbath, God’s Word, and Jesus our great high priest are discussed. The theme of our unworthiness because of sin, and Jesus’ act of forgiveness because of the cross anchor this chapter. If you don’t yet have a LSB, see Pastor Mark.

Adult Education: Time for Adult confirmation. Do you remember your confirmation training? Can you explain Christian faith to someone who isn’t Christian? If not, it’s time for a tune up. Join us for a basic confirmation course. We will be viewing quick paced, clever videos, then learning about faith all over again. Pastor Mark will be leading. Please plan on joining us.

Youth

Youth Director’s Days Off & Office Hours: Our Youth Director is Tracy Katschke and her days off are Friday and Saturday. She does not check church voice mail or emails on those days. Tracy is engaged at Peace half-time, and her office hours are Monday - Thursday 10am - 2pm. She can be reached on her cell for urgent matters. Her cell phone can be accessed by calling church.
High School Youth Group: Our next youth group meeting will be Sunday, October 7th from 7-8:15pm. All high school students and friends are welcome to join us! On Sunday, October 21st, we will be going to Richardson Corn Maze! We will be leaving at 12pm from Peace and should return by 3pm. Adult chaperones/drivers are needed - please let Tracy know if you can help!
Confirmation Retreat: Our Confirmation class will be going on a retreat to Tower Hill in Sawyer, MI November 2nd-4th. During our retreat weekend, we will be exploring the Apostles' Creed, doing a service project and having fun connecting with each other! Retreat permission slips and the $50 fee are due in Tracy's mailbox by Sunday, October 21st! Please see Tracy with any questions.

Joyful Noisemakers: Children in grades K-5 that can read are invited to join our children's choir, Joyful Noisemakers.  We have short rehearsals every Saturday morning at 10:30, where we learn how to sing beautifully to the Lord!

Events
Brewing Questions: Calling all 21+ congregation members! Please join Pastor Mark and Tracy at Giordano's on Tuesday, October 23rd at 7pm for our new group, Brewing Questions! We will put a variety of questions in a pot (questions can be theology related, sports related, etc) and have a night of good food, beer and great conversation!
Social Outreach

Operation Warm:  Once again we have partnered with the Chapel Church in Lake Zurich for Operation Warm!  We would like to gather enough donations to provide 50 new warm winter jackets  to children in the local area.  $20 will procure a new coat. Our campaign will run Sept 16- Oct 21.  You may go to the website and make a donation using the following link: https://give.operationwarm.org/team/183187.  This goes right to our page.  Click the donate button on the left. You may also drop off a check or cash in the school bus box in the narthex. Make checks payable to Operation Warm.  Please tear off a square for each coat on the display.  This will be our barometer of how we are doing. Thank you so much for  your generosity and keeping the kids warm at the bus stop this winter! See Donna Walstrum with questions.

In Crisis?  Anyone anywhere can be affected by mental health struggles including depression, anxiety, having feelings of being overwhelmed, or having suicidal thoughts.  It has been in the news lately about the significant increase (up nearly 30%) in the annual rate of suicide from 1999-2016. The key to preventing people from reaching the point of suicide is to talk about it and offer help, encouragement and resources to those struggling to keep living.  The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255 and the crisis text line is text CONNECT to 741741 for people who are in distress and feel like they are at risk of hurting themselves, or if you know of a person who is at risk.

Mission Projects Day: Feb. 2, 2018. We are looking for individuals that would like to donate items for the various kits that we assemble.  There are sign-up sheets in the hallway. Indicate how many of each item that you plan to provide and check them off when you drop them off. Put the items in the bins in the hallway with "Mission Projects Day" on them somewhere.  It is a great time to find things on sale!  We are also looking for individuals to help cut the fringe for the fleece blankets sew school kit bags and pillows for hospice that we will stuff on Mission Projects Day.  If you can help in any way, please sign up!  If you have any questions, please call Sue Koenig.  Thank you!!

Ongoing Opportunities

Simply Giving: Many of our members and friends give with Simply Giving automated debit. This program is very important for our congregation. It keeps income steady during the summer months when giving drops because people are out of town. Please consider it! Giving forms are on the table in the narthex. If you do participate in Simply Giving, or if you do not have an offering on a particular Sunday you can still participate in the act of giving during the service by obtaining Giving Acknowledgment card from an usher and placing it in the offering plate to acknowledge your support of our ministries at Peace.

On-Line Giving: You now have the option to make a gift to Peace from your computer, tablet or phone! To give online go to the Peace web site www.PeaceLutheranLZ.com and click on the "Make a Donation" button. To give from your phone, download the Give Plus Church app and search for Peace in Lake Zurich to make your gift. Finally, to give from your phone without downloading the Give Plus Church app just text a gift to the Peace text number, 224-458-2996. Just enter an amount and send the text to the Peace number and you will be sent a link to complete the transaction. See Kirk Swanson if you have any questions.
