Baptism of Our Lord

PRELUDE: LET US BREAK BREAD TOGETHER

Pastor Daniel Morris welcomes the church to worship.
WELCOME AND INTRO TO THE DAY

Pastor Daniel Morris leads the assembly in thanksgiving for the gift of baptism.
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,
whose voice is upon the waters,
whose mercy is poured out upon all people,
whose goodness cascades over all creation.
Amen.

Let us confess our sin, trusting in the abundant grace of God.
Silence is kept for reflection.

Holy God,
you search us and know us.
You are acquainted with all our ways.
We confess that our hearts are burdened by sin--
our own sins and the broken systems that bind us.
We turn inward, failing to follow
your outward way of love.
We distrust those who are not like us.
We exploit the earth and its resources
and fail to consider generations to come.
Forgive us, gracious God,
for all we have done and left undone.
Even before the words are on our tongues,
you know them;
receive them in your divine mercy.
Amen.

How vast is God’s grace!
Through the power and promise of ☩ Christ Jesus,
our sins are washed away
and we are claimed as God’s own beloved.
Indeed, we are forgiven.
In the wake of God’s forgiveness,
we are called to be the beloved community
living out Christ’s justice
and the Spirit’s reconciling peace.
Amen.

Jeff Horvath will lead the assembly in our gathering song.
GATHERING SONG O Jesus, I Have Promised (verse 4)

4 O Jesus, you have promised to all who follow you that where you are in glory your servant shall be too. And Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end; oh, give me grace to follow, my master and my friend.

Pastor Daniel and the assembly greet each other.
GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

The Pastor Daniel leads the prayer of the day.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
 Let us pray.
A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, most merciful redeemer, for the countless blessings and benefits you give. May we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day praising you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

CHILDREN'S WORD

Our first reading this morning is read by Kirk Swanson
FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 3:1-20
The reading may be announced: A reading from 1 Samuel.

1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.
  2At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” 5and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
  10Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 11Then the Lord said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. 12On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever.”
  15Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” He said, “Here I am.” 17Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” 18So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, “It is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him.”
  19As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.

The reading may be concluded:
The word of the Lord.
The assembly responds:
Thanks be to God.

Our Psalm this morning is read by Kirk Swanson
Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18

 1Lord, you have searched me out;
  O Lord, you have known me.
 2You know my sitting down and my rising up;
  you discern my thoughts from afar.
 3You trace my journeys and my resting-places
  and are acquainted with all my ways.
 4Indeed, there is not a word on my lips,
  but you, O Lord, know it altogether.
 5You encompass me, behind and before,
  and lay your hand upon me.
 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
  it is so high that I cannot attain it.
 13For you yourself created my inmost parts;
  you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
 14I will thank you because I am marvelously made;
  your works are wonderful, and I know it well.
 15My body was not hidden from you,
  while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth.
 16Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book;
  my days were fashioned before they came to be.
 17How deep I find your thoughts, O God!
  How great is the sum of them!
 18If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
  to count them all, my lifespan would need to be like yours.

Our second reading this morning is read by Kirk Swanson
SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

The reading may be announced: A reading from 1 Corinthians.

12“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.” 17But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

The reading may be concluded:
The word of the Lord.
The assembly responds:
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The gospel is read by Pastor Daniel Morris.
GOSPEL: John 1:43-51
The gospel is announced. The holy gospel according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.

43The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
The gospel concludes:
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Pastor Daniel Morris proclaims God’s Word for you in the sermon.
SERMON

HYMN OF THE DAY: “Will You Come and Follow Me” (verses 1,2,5)

1 "Will you come and follow me
if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know
and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown
in you and you in me?

2 "Will you leave yourself behind
if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind
and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare,
should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer pray'r
in you and you in me?

5 Lord, your summons echoes true
when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
and never be the same.
In your company I'll go
where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow
in you and you in me.

Pastor Daniel Morris leads the assembly in confessing the faith we are baptized into.

Pastor Daniel
PREFACE
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,
through our Savior Jesus Christ.
By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations;
in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son;
and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory.
And so, with all the choirs of angels,
with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

Pastor Daniel
THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE
Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life:
Blessed are you for the birth of creation.
Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light.
Blessed are you for your promise to your people.
Blessed are you in the prophets’ hopes and dreams.
Blessed are you for Mary’s openness to your will.
Blessed are you for your Son Jesus,
the Word made flesh.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

With this bread and cup
we remember your Word dwelling among us,
full of grace and truth.
We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection.
We look with hope for his coming.
Come, Lord Jesus.
Holy God, we long for your Spirit.
Come among us.
Bless this meal.
May your Word take flesh in us.
Awaken your people.
Fill us with your light.
Bring the gift of peace on earth.
Come, Holy Spirit.
All praise and glory are yours,
Holy One of Israel,
Word of God incarnate,
Power of the Most High,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Pastor Daniel
LORD’S PRAYER
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Pastor Daniel
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Beloved: here is bread; here is wine. Here is Jesus.
Come and be fed.

Pastor Daniel
COMMUNION

Baptism of Our Lord

PRELUDE

Pastor Daniel Morris welcomes the church to worship.
GREETING AND INTRODUCTION TO THE DAY

Pastor Daniel Morris leads the assembly in thanksgiving for the gift of baptism.
THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM
In the name of the Father,
and of the ☩ Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God’s mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty, you are the river of life,
you are the everlasting wellspring, you are the fire of rebirth.
Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams.
Praise to you for Lake Michigan and Lake Zurich, for Echo Lake, for Honey Lake, and for Oak Ridge Marsh.

Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow.
Your waters are below us, around us, above us: our life is born in you.
You are the fountain of resurrection.
Praise to you for your saving waters:
Noah and the animals survive the flood, Hagar discovers your well.
The Israelites escape through the sea, and they drink from your gushing rock.

Naaman washes his leprosy away,
and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again.
Praise to you for the water of baptism and for your Word
that saves us in this sacrament.
Breathe your Spirit into all who are gathered here and into all creation.
Illumine our days. Enliven our bones. Dry our tears.
Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us.

Satisfy all our thirst with your living water, Jesus Christ, our Savior,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Jeff Horvath will lead the assembly in our gathering song.
GATHERING HYMN #445 Wash, O God, our sons and daughters

1. Wash, O God, our sons and daughters, where your cleansing waters flow.
Number them among your people; bless as Christ blessed long ago.
Weave them garments bright and sparkling; compass them with love and light.
Fill, anoint them; send your Spirit, holy dove and heart’s delight.

2. We who bring them long for nurture; by your milk may we be fed.
Let us join your feast, partaking cup of blessing, living bread.
God, renew us, guide our footsteps; free from sin and all its snares,
one with Christ in living, dying, by your Spirit, children, heirs.

3. Oh, how deep your holy wisdom! Unimagined, all your ways!
To your name be glory, honor! With our lives we worship, praise!
We your people stand before you, water-washed and Spirit born.
By your grace, our lives we offer. Recreate us; God, transform!

Our psalm this morning is read by Bridget Heroff
PSALM 29

 1Ascribe to the Lord, you gods,
  ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
 2Ascribe to the Lord the glory due God’s name;
  worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
 3The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders;
  the Lord is upon the mighty waters.
 4The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice;
  the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor.
 5The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees;
  the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
 6the Lord makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
  and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.
 7The voice of the Lord
  bursts forth in lightning flashes.
 8The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
  the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
 9The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare.
  And in the temple of the Lord all are crying, “Glory!”
 10The Lord sits enthroned above the flood;
  the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore.
 11O Lord, give strength to your people;
  give them, O Lord, the blessings of peace.

Deacon Tracy Katschke brings the word for the children.
CHILDREN'S WORD

The gospel is read by Pastor Daniel Morris.
GOSPEL: Mark 1:4-11
 The holy gospel according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.

4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

  9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

SENDING SONG #448 This is the Spirit’s entry

1 This is the Spirit's entry now:
the water and the word,
the cross of Jesus on your brow,
the seal both felt and heard.

2 This miracle of life reborn
comes from the Lord of breath;
the sinless one from life was torn;
our life comes through his death.

3 Let water be the sacred sign
that we must die each day
to rise again by his design
as foll'wers of his way.

4 Renewing Spirit, hear our praise
for your baptismal pow'r
that washes us through all our days.
Come, cleanse again this hour.

1. God, whose almighty word chaos and darkness heard and took their flight: hear us, we humbly pray, and where the gospel day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light.

2. Christ, who once came to bring, on your redeeming wing, healing and sight; health to the troubled mind, sight where illusions blind; oh, now to humankind let there be light.

3. Spirit of truth and love, life-giving, holy dove, speed forth your flight; move on the water's face
bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth's darkest place let there be light.

Our psalm this morning is read by Anne Blaylock
PSALM: Psalm 147:12-20

 12Worship the Lord, O Jerusalem;
  praise your God, O Zion,
 13who has strengthened the bars of your gates
  and has blessed your children within you.
 14God has established peace on your borders
  and satisfies you with the finest wheat.
 15God sends out a command to the earth,
  a word that runs very swiftly.
 16God gives snow like wool,
  scattering frost like ashes.
 17God scatters hail like bread crumbs.
  Who can stand against God’s cold?
 18The Lord sends forth the word and melts them;
  the wind blows, and the waters flow.
 19God declares the word to Jacob,
  statutes and judgments to Israel.
 20The Lord has not done so to any other nation;
  they do not know God’s judgments. Hallelujah!

CHILDREN'S WORD

The gospel is read by Deacon Tracy Katschke.  The gospel is announced.
GOSPEL: John 1:1-18

The holy gospel according to John.  Glory to you, O Lord.

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.  6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
  10He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.  14And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 15(John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ ”) 16From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

The gospel concludes:
The gospel of the Lord.   Praise to you, O Christ.

Deacon Tracy Katschke proclaims God’s Word for you in the sermon.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Joining our voices with the song of the angels, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need.

A brief silence.

Redeeming God, you gather together your people from the farthest parts of the earth. Protect your church from stumbling. Let it not be overcome by sorrow, division, or despair. Make us radiant with goodness, that we might live always to the praise of your glory. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

You bring together heaven and earth. All creation testifies to your splendor. Hold the ecosystems of this earth in delicate balance, from coastlands to farmlands, forests to wetlands, deserts to rainforests. Show us new ways to live in harmony with the world around us. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

You overflow with grace upon grace. Expand the imaginations of those who serve in positions of authority. Open their hearts to the needs of their nations and communities. Protect all those in harm’s way and those risking danger for the sake of others. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

You come to us in the beauty of darkness and of light. Bring justice and reconciliation to communities divided by oppressions and misuse of power. Guide us to speak holy words of advocacy and truth. Help us to honor your image in one another. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

You bring consolation to those who weep. Embrace those who feel far-off, excluded, or defeated. Accompany those living with chronic and invisible illness. Sustain the weak and weary. Refresh those who labor under the weight of pain or sickness (especially for Mike, Sherri, Lizetta, Kim, Kyle, Jan, Rita, Gina, Laurie, Tracy, Jeff, Chris, Don, Douglas, Hoyt, and Bruce) Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Whatever else is in our heart and on our mind, our needs and our joys, we offer to you now as we pray for ourselves…(pause a moment)…. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

God of mercy, come quickly to us with grace upon grace as we lift these and all our prayers to you, in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

Deacon Tracy Katschke leads the assembly in giving thanks for God’s Word.
THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD

Let us pray.
O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through life
with the words of your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others, and at the end bring all the world to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever.
Amen.

Tim Harris leads the assembly in the Lord’s Prayer.
LORD’S PRAYER

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
         thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
         and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
         For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Receive the blessing.
BLESSING

The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy.

CLOSING HYMN Go Tell It on the Mountain

Refrain:  Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev'rywhere;
             go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born!

1 While shepherds kept their watching o'er silent flocks by night,
behold, throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. Refrain

2 The shepherds feared and trembled when, lo, above the earth
rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior's birth. Refrain

3 Down in a lonely manger the humble Christ was born;
and God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn. Refrain

PRELUDE #2 The First Noel

The Piff Family lights the wreath.
LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH & CHRISTMAS PROCLAMATION
Many ages from the time when God created the heavens and the earth and then formed man and woman in his own image; long after the great flood, when God made the rainbow shine forth as a sign of the covenant; twenty-one centuries from the time the promise was given to Abraham and Sarah; thirteen centuries after Moses led the people of Israel out of Egypt and Miriam danced in freedom; eleven hundred years from the time of Ruth and the judges; one thousand years from the anointing of David as king, in fulfillment of the times and years and months and days discerned by the prophets; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; the seven hundred and fifty-second year from the foundation of the city of Rome; the forty-second year of the reign of Octavian Augustus; while the whole world enjoyed a span of peace, Jesus Christ, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to sanctify the world by his most merciful coming, being conceived by the Holy Spirit and nine months of growth in the womb of his mother— now in our own times is the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, God made flesh.

Travis Hoying, Pastor Morris, Ben Dahlke, and Jeff Horvath lead the assembly in song..
GATHERING SONG O Come, All Ye Faithful

1 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come and behold him, born the king of angels: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

3 Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God in the highest: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

Pastor Daniel welcomes the church to worship.

GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.    And also with you.

Pastor Daniel leads the Prayer of the Day.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray.   Almighty God, you made this holy night shine with the brightness of the true Light. Grant that here on earth we may walk in the light of Jesus’ presence and in the last day wake to the brightness of his glory; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Our 1st reading is read by Julie Cohen
FIRST READING: Isaiah 9:2-7
2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. 3You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. 6For a child has been born for us, a son given to us;  authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7His authority shall grow continually,   and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Jeff Horvath leads us.
CAROL: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (ELW 270)

1 Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn king; peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled." Joyful, all you nations, rise; join the triumph of the skies; with angelic hosts proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!" Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn king!"

2 Christ, by highest heav'n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see! Hail, incarnate deity! Pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel!  Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn king!"

Our 2nd reading is read by Julie Cohen
SECOND READING: Titus 2:11-14
11The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, 12training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, 13while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians leads us in welcoming the gospel.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Angels We Have Heard on High (ELW 289) (vs 1 and 2)

1 Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o'er the plains, and the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains.  Gloria in excelsis Deo; gloria in excelsis Deo.

2 Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be which inspire your heav'nly song? Gloria in excelsis Deo; gloria in excelsis Deo.

Pastor Daniel leads the Gospel
GOSPEL: Luke 2:1-14 [15-20]
The holy gospel according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

1In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to their own towns to be registered. 4Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.  8In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,  14“Glory to God in the highest heaven,   and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” [ 15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.]
The gospel of the Lord.    Praise to you, O Christ.

The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians leads us in concluding the gospel.
CAROL: Angels We Have Heard on High (ELW 289) (vs 3)

3 Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing; come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn king. Gloria in excelsis Deo; gloria in excelsis Deo.

Pastor Daniel
SERMON

Stan Sanderson leads us in our carol.
HYMN OF THE DAY O Little Town of Bethlehem(ELW 279)

1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light. The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

2 For Christ is born of Mary, and, gathered all above while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond'ring love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the king, and peace to all the earth!

Pastor Daniel leads Nicene Creed
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Stan Sanderson leads us in prayer.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Joining our voices with the song of the angels, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need.
A brief silence.
The shepherds sing, “Jesus Christ is born!” Let your church throughout the world proclaim this good news, over the hills and everywhere. Unite the voices of all your faithful people in songs of praise and rejoicing. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Heaven and nature sing, “Joy to the world!” Give respite to flocks, fields, and those who tend them. Come near to us in the beauty of nighttime, the shining of the stars, and the hush of a world at rest. May our wonder at your creation rouse our care for all the earth. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

The angels sing, “Peace on earth!” Come quickly to still the strife of this world. Hush the noise of war and violence in places of unrest. Inspire leaders of nations to seek lasting peace and sustainable provision for all in their care. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Mary sings melodies of comfort to her newborn child. Bring rest and reassurance to those facing struggles this night. Shelter travelers and those without homes. Console those who lie awake due to pain or anxiety. Heal those who are sick or hurting. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Love sings through the sound of a new baby’s cry. Bless new parents and expectant parents. Comfort those who long for children, especially those running out of hope or options. Surround families of every shape and size with your love and care. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God of mercy, come quickly to us with grace upon grace as we lift these and all our prayers to you, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Pastor Daniel

Pastor Daniel
GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you.   And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.   We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.   It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Pastor Daniel
PREFACE
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. In the wonder and mystery of the Word made flesh you have opened the eyes of faith to a new and radiant vision of your glory, that, beholding the God made visible, we may be drawn to love the God whom we cannot see. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Pastor Daniel
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heav’n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Pastor Daniel
THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE
We give you thanks, Father, through Jesus Christ, your beloved Son, whom you sent in this end of the ages to save and redeem us and to proclaim to us your will. He is your Word, inseparable from you, through whom you created all things, and in whom you take delight. He is your Word, sent from heaven to a virgin’s womb. He there took on our nature and our lot and was shown forth as your Son, born of the Holy Spirit and of the virgin Mary. He, our Lord Jesus, fulfilled all your will and won for you a holy people; he stretched out his hands in suffering in order to free from suffering those who trust you. He is the one who, handed over to a death he freely accepted, in order to destroy death, to break the bonds of the evil one, to crush hell underfoot, to give light to the righteous, to establish his covenant, and to show forth the resurrection, taking bread and giving thanks to you, said: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, then, his death and resurrection, we take this bread and cup, giving you thanks that you have made us worthy to stand before you and to serve you as your priestly people. Send your Spirit upon these gifts of your church; gather into one all who share this bread and wine; fill us with your Holy Spirit to establish our faith in truth, that we may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ; through whom all glory and honor are yours, almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy church, both now and forever.
Amen.

Pastor Daniel
LORD’S PRAYER
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Pastor Daniel
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
The Word is revealed in a manger, in simple bread and wine. Come meet Christ in this meal.

Pastor Daniel
COMMUNION
During the communion song, you may distribute the bread to the members of your household saying, “The body of Christ given for you.” After all have eaten, you may distribute the cup to the members of your household saying, "The blood of Christ shed for you.” If you are alone you may say, “The body of Christ,” as you receive the bread and, “The blood of Christ,” as you receive the juice. If you or another member of your household is not taking communion, you may make the sign of the cross on your/their forehead and say, “The Lord Jesus keep me/you in the promise of my/your baptism.”

Joan Precillio (instrumental only)
COMMUNION SONG Love Has Come (ELW 292)

2 Love is born! Come, share in the wonder. Love is God now asleep in the hay. See the glow in the eyes of his mother; what is the name her heart is saying? Love! Love! Love is the name she whispers; Love! Love! Jesus, Immanuel.

3 Love has come and never will leave us! Love is life everlasting and free. Love is Jesus within and among us. Love is the peace our hearts are seeking. Love! Love! Love is the gift of Christmas; Love! Love! Praise to you, God on high!

Stan Sanderson leads us in prayer.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Let us pray. Radiant God, with our eyes we have seen your salvation, and in this meal we have feasted on your grace. May your Word take flesh in us, that we may be your holy people, revealing your glory made known to us in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

Stan Sanderson leads us in candle lighting.
CANDLE LIGHTING
At this time, we invite you to dim the lights in your home. You may light one candle and have each member of your household light their candle from the one that is lit. When all candles are lit, we welcome the light of the newborn Christ as we sing Silent Night.

Andy Heroff leads us in our carol.
CAROL: Silent Night, Holy Night!:  (ELW 281)

1 Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy Infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

2 Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; glories stream from heaven afar, heav'nly hosts sing, alleluia! Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born!

3 Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love's pure light radiant beams from your holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at your birth, Jesus, Lord, at your birth.

Pastor Daniel
BLESSING
Almighty God, who sent the Holy Spirit to Mary, proclaimed joy through the angels,
sent the shepherds with good news, and led the magi by a star, bless you this day ☩ through the Word made flesh.  Amen.

Cathy Malloy and Travis Hoying lead us in our sending songl.

The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians lead us in welcoming the good news.

CAROL: Angels We Have Heard on High (ELW 289)

1 Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o'er the plains, and the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains.  Gloria in excelsis Deo; gloria in excelsis Deo.

2 Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be which inspire your heav'nly song? Gloria in excelsis Deo; gloria in excelsis Deo.

Pastor Daniel
CHRISTMAS STORY AND MESSAGE

The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians lead us in concluding the good news.
CAROL: Angels We Have Heard on High (ELW 289)

3 Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing; come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn king. Gloria in excelsis Deo; gloria in excelsis Deo.

Stan Sanderson will lead the assembly in our Carol.
CAROL: O Little Town of Bethlehem(ELW 279)

1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light. The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

2 For Christ is born of Mary, and, gathered all above while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond'ring love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the king, and peace to all the earth!

Jason Fralish leads us in prayer.

Amen.

Pastor
PEACE:
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.

Pastor
GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you.    And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.    We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.    It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Pastor
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heav’n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Pastor
THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Pastor
LORD’S PRAYER
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Pastor
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
The Word is revealed in a manger, in simple bread and wine.
Come meet Christ in this meal.

Pastor

Jason Fralish  leads us in candle lighting.
CANDLE LIGHTING (Christmas)
At this time, we invite you to dim the lights in your home. You may light one candle and have each member of your household light their candle from the one that is lit. When all candles are lit, we welcome the light of the newborn Christ as we sing Silent Night.

Andy Heroff leads us in our carol.
CAROL Silent Night, Holy Night!:  (ELW 281)

Pastor
BLESSING
Almighty God, who sent the Holy Spirit to Mary, proclaimed joy through the angels,
sent the shepherds with good news, and led the magi by a star, bless you this day ☩ through the Word made flesh.  Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Cathy Malloy and Travis Hoying lead us in our sending song.
SENDING SONG: Joy to the World (ELW 267)

1 Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her king; let ev'ry heart prepare him room and heav'n and nature sing, and heav'n and nature sing, and heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.

2 Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let all their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3 No more let sin and sorrow grow nor thorns infest the ground; he comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found.

4 He rules the world with truth and grace and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love.

Longest Night Blue Christmas Evening Prayer

Jeff Horvath
PRELUDE “Each Winter as the Year Grows Older”

SILENT MEDITATION
A chime will begin and end the silent meditation.

Pastor Daniel welcomes the church to worship.
GREETING
 From the one who was, who is, and who is to come:
Grace and peace be with you all.

Pastor Daniel will lead the assembly in our hymn of light.
Hymn of Light “Come Light of Light”
From Singing in Community: Paperless Music for Worship.

THANKSGIVING FOR LIGHT

Our psalm this evening is read by Deacon Tracy.
Psalm 27

1The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2When evildoers close in against me to devour my flesh,
they, my foes and my enemies, will stumble and fall.
3Though an army encamp against me, my heart will not fear.
Though war rise up against me, my trust will not be shaken.
4One thing I ask of the Lord; one thing I seek;
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek God in the temple.
5For in the day of trouble God will give me shelter,
hide me in the hidden places of the sanctuary, and raise me high upon a rock.
6Even now my head is lifted up above my enemies who surround me.
Therefore I will offer sacrifice in the sanctuary, sacrifices of rejoicing; I will sing and make music to the Lord.
7Hear my voice, O Lord, when I call;
have mercy on me and answer me.
8My heart speaks your message “Seek my face.”
Your face, O Lord, I will seek.
9Hide not your face from me, turn not away from your servant in anger.
Cast me not away you have been my helper; forsake me not, O God of my salvation.
10Though my father and my mother forsake me,
the Lord will take me in.
11Teach me your way, O Lord;
lead me on a level path, because of my oppressors.
12Subject me not to the will of my foes,
for they rise up against me, false witnesses breathing violence.
13This I believe that I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living!
14Wait for the Lord and be strong.
Take heart and wait for the Lord!

Prayer
Lord God, our light and our salvation, grant that your servants who seek your face in times of trouble may see your goodness in the land of the living, and that we may be set safely on the rock of our faith, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

The first reading is read by ???
First Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7

 9:2 The people who walked in darkness
 have seen a great light;
 those who lived in a land of deep darkness --
 on them light has shined.
 3You have multiplied the nation,
 you have increased its joy;
 they rejoice before you
 as with joy at the harvest,
 as people exult when dividing plunder.
 4For the yoke of their burden,
 and the bar across their shoulders,
 the rod of their oppressor,
 you have broken as on the day of Midian.
 5For all the boots of the tramping warriors
 and all the garments rolled in blood
 shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
 6For a child has been born for us,
 a son given to us;
 authority rests upon his shoulders;
 and he is named
 Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
 Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
 7His authority shall grow continually,
 and there shall be endless peace
 for the throne of David and his kingdom.
 He will establish and uphold it
 with justice and with righteousness
 from this time onward and forevermore.
 The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The sung response is led by Allison Hearst.
Hymn #257 O come, O come Emmanuel

1  O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here
     until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to you, O Israel.

The second reading is read by ???
Second Reading Isaiah 40:1-11

40:1 Comfort, O comfort my people,
 says your God.
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that she has served her term,
 that her penalty is paid,
that she has received from the Lord’s hand
    double for all her sins.
3 A voice cries out:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of
the Lord,
    make straight in the desert a highway
for our God.
4 Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
    and all people shall see it together,
    for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
6 A voice says, “Cry out!”
    And I said, “What shall I cry?”
All people are grass,
    their constancy is like the flower of the field.
7 The grass withers, the flower fades,
    when the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
    surely the people are grass.
8 The grass withers, the flower fades;
    but the word of our God will stand forever.
9 Get you up to a high mountain,
    O Zion, herald of good tidings;[a]
lift up your voice with strength,
    O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,[b]
    lift it up, do not fear;
say to the cities of Judah,
    “Here is your God!”
10 See, the Lord God comes with might,
    and his arm rules for him;
his reward is with him,
    and his recompense before him.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
    he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom,
    and gently lead the mother sheep.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The sung response is led by Karen Dahlke.
Hymn #256 Comfort, comfort now my people

 1  "Comfort, comfort now my people;
     tell of peace!" So says our God.
     Comfort those who sit in darkness
     mourning under sorrow's load.
     To God's people now proclaim
     that God's pardon waits for them!
     Tell them that their war is over;
     God will reign in peace forever.

The third reading is read by ???
Third Reading Matthew 11:28-30

11:28 “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The sung response is led by Karen Zicco.
Hymn #257: O come, O come, Emmanuel

 6  O come, O Dayspring, come and cheer;
     O Sun of justice, now draw near.
     Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
     and death's dark shadow put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe.
In your Son, Emmanuel,
you have shown us your light
and saved us from the power of sin.
Bless us as we light the candles on this wreath.
Increase our longing for your presence,

Gathering Song The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came (ELW 265)

1 The angel Gabriel from heaven came, with wings as drifted snow, with eyes as flame:
"All hail to thee, O lowly maiden Mary, most highly favored lady." Gloria!

2 "For know a blessed mother thou shalt be, all generations laud and honor thee;
thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady." Gloria!

3 Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head; "To me be as it pleaseth God," she said.
"My soul shall laud and magnify God's holy name." Most highly favored lady, Gloria!

4 Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say: "Most highly favored lady." Gloria!

Our psalm this morning is read by Terry Koncel
Psalm: Luke 1:46b-55

 46bMy soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
  47my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
 48for you, Lord, have looked with favor on your lowly servant.
  From this day all generations will call me blessed:
 49you, the Almighty, have done great things for me
  and holy is your name.
 50You have mercy on those who fear you,
  from generation to generation.
 51You have shown strength with your arm
  and scattered the proud in their conceit,
 52casting down the mighty from their thrones
  and lifting up the lowly.
 53You have filled the hungry with good things
  and sent the rich away empty.
 54You have come to the aid of your servant Israel,
  to remember the promise of mercy,
 55the promise made to our forebears,
  to Abraham and his children forever.

CHILDREN'S WORD

The gospel is read by Pastor Pastor Danie Morris.  The gospel is announced.
The holy gospel according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Gospel: Luke 1:26-38
 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

The gospel concludes:
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Pastor Pastor Danie Morris proclaims God’s Word for you in the sermon.

Amen.

Stan Sanderson leads the assembly in the Lord’s Prayer.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

The council President/Vice President comes forward and addresses the assembly.
Bruce and Lin, as you leave our Peace, we wish to bid you farewell.

A reading from Isaiah: Thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. (Isaiah 43:1-3)

At this time, I invite the Koenigs to offer a few words on behalf of the people of Peace.

Brief comments about those who are leaving and their life in the congregation may follow.

Third Sunday of Advent

Stan Sanderson
PRELUDE Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming (ELW 272) (vs 1,2,4)

1 Lo, how a rose e'er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! Of Jesse's lineage coming as seers of old have sung, it came, a flow'r so bright, amid the cold of winter, when half-spent was the night.

2 Isaiah had foretold it, the rose I have in mind; with Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind. To show God's love aright, she bore to us a Savior, when half-spent was the night.

4 O Savior, child of Mary, who felt our human woe; O Savior, king of glory, who dost our weakness know: bring us at length, we pray, to the bright courts of heaven and into endless day.

Pastor Daniel welcomes the church to worship.
GREETING

Wreath lighting this morning will be by the Zicco Family
LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe.
Your prophets spoke of a day when the desert would blossom
and waters would break forth in the wilderness.
Bless us as we light the candles on this wreath.
Strengthen our hearts
as we prepare for the coming of the Lord.
May he give water to all who thirst,
for he is our light and our salvation.
Blessed be God forever.
Amen.

Jeff Horvath will lead the assembly in our gathering song.
GATHERING SONG As the Dark Awaits the Dawn (ELW 261) (1,2,4)

1 As the dark awaits the dawn, so we await your light. O Star of promise, scatter night,
loving bright, loving bright, till shades of fear are gone.

2 As the blue expectant hour before the silv'ring skies, we long to see your day arise,
whole and wise, whole and wise, unto your holy dawn.

4 Shine your future on this place, enlighten ev'ry guest, that through us stream your holiness,
bright and blest, bright and blest; come dawn, O Sun of grace.

Our psalm this morning is read by Sue Koenig
PSALM: Psalm 126

1When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
  then were we like those who dream.
2Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy.
   Then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”
3The Lord has done great things for us,
  and we are glad indeed.
4Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
   like the watercourses of the Negeb.
5Those who sowed with tears
  will reap with songs of joy.
6Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed,
  will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.

CHILDREN'S WORD

The gospel is read by Pastor Pastor Danie Morris.

The holy gospel according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.

GOSPEL: John 1:6-8, 19-28

6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.  19This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” 21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23He said,  “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ ” as the prophet Isaiah said.   24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” 26John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” 28This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

 Let us pray for the church, the world, and all of creation.

God of power and might, shine your radiance and come quickly to this weary world. Hear our prayers for everyone in need.

A brief silence.

God of preachers and messengers, you have entrusted your church with the work of proclaiming good news. Strengthen the witness of bishops, pastors, deacons, church musicians, lay leaders, and all people who contribute their prayers and talents to public worship. Embed your word in their hearts. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

God of every living creature, you announce the year of your favor for all of creation. Extend your kindness and relief to endangered animals and plants. Strengthen the human beings who rely on the rhythms of nature to make their living. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

God of all peoples and nations, you plant us as your oaks of righteousness and ask us to care for one another. Be present with the leaders of every nation as they govern. Give them a spirit of righteousness, that your goodness and mercy is revealed through their actions. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

God of exiles and wanderers, you repair what was once destroyed. We pray for people who have been displaced from their homes by fire, flood, or earthquake. Support the work of Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Disaster Response, and all disaster relief organizations in their recovery efforts. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

God of the powerful and helpless, you clothe us with strength when our spirits are weak and weary. Bestow your spirit upon this congregation and empower us to comfort the people who turn to us in times of need (especially for Mike, Sherri, Lizetta, Kim, Kyle, Jan, Rita, Gina, Laurie, Tracy, Jeff, Chris, Don, Douglas, Hoyt, and Bruce). Make your church a place of refuge and healing. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

We pray for our own personal needs and our thanksgivings in these few moments of silence (pause a moment.) Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Draw near to us, O God, and receive our prayers for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Pastor Daniel leads the assembly in giving thanks for God’s Word.
THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD

Let us pray.
O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through life with the words of your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others, and at the end bring all the world to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever.
Amen.

Jason Fralish leads the assembly in the Lord’s Prayer.
LORD’S PRAYER

SENDING SONG People, Look East (ELW 248)

1 People, look east. The time is near of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look east, and sing today-- Love, the Guest, is on the way.

4 Angels announce with shouts of mirth him who brings new life to earth.
Set ev'ry peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming.
People, look east, and sing today-- Love, the Lord, is on the way.

PEACE AND DISMISSAL
The peace of Christ be with you always.  Let us go forth sharing a greeting of Christ's peace.

Second Sunday in Advent

Jeff Horvath
PRELUDE It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (ELW 282)

1 It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heav'n's all-gracious king." The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

2 Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heav'nly music floats o'er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hov'ring wing,
and ever o'er its babel sounds the blessed angels sing.

3 And you, beneath life's crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow: look now, for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing; oh, rest beside the weary road and hear the angels sing!

Pastor Daniel welcomes the church to worship.
GREETING

Wreath lighting this morning will be by the Kohl Family
LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH (Blessing for Second Candle)
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe.
John the Baptist calls all people to prepare the Lord’s way
for the kingdom of heaven is near.
Bless us as we light the candles on this wreath.
Baptize us with the fire of your Spirit,
that we may be a light shining in the darkness
welcoming others as Christ has welcomed us,
for he is our light and our salvation.
Blessed be God forever.
Amen.
Ben will lead the assembly in our gathering song.
GATHERING SONG “All the Earth is Hopeful” (ELW 266)

1 All earth is hopeful, the Savior comes at last! Furrows lie open for God's creative task:
this, the labor of people who struggle to see how God's truth and justice set ev'rybody free.

(1 Toda la tierra espera al Salvador y el surco abierto, la obra del Senor;
es el mundo que lucha por la libertad, reclama justicia y busca la verdad.)

2 People of Israel, you heard the prophet tell: "A virgin mother will bear Emmanuel"; she conceived him, "God with us," our brother, whose birth restores hope and courage to children of
this earth.

(2 Dice el profeta al pueblo de Israel: "De madre virgen ya viene Emmanuel,"
sera "Dios con nosotros," hermano sera, con el la esperanza al mundo volvera.)

4 We first saw Jesus a baby in a crib. This same Lord Jesus today has come to live
in our world; he his present, in neighbors we see our Jesus is with us, and ever sets us free.

(4 En una cueva Jesus aparecio, pero en el mundo esta presente hoy.
Vive en nuestros hermanos, con ellos esta; y vuelve de nuevo a darnos libertad.)

Our psalm this morning is read by Anne Blaylock
Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13

 1You have been gracious to your land, O Lord;
  you have restored the good fortune of Jacob.
 2You have forgiven the iniquity of your people
  and blotted out all their sins.
 8I will listen to what the Lord God is saying;
  for you speak peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to you.
 9Truly, your salvation is very near to those who fear you,
  that your glory may dwell in our land.
 10Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together;
  righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
 11Faithfulness shall spring up from the earth,
  and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
 12The Lord will indeed grant prosperity,
  and our land will yield its increase.
 13Righteousness shall go before the Lord
  and shall prepare for God a pathway.

The children’s word is brought by Deacon Tracy Katschke.
CHILDREN'S WORD

The gospel is read by Pastor Pastor Danie Morris.
The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.

GOSPEL: Mark 1:1-8

1The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
  2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,
 “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
  who will prepare your way;
 3the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
  ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
  make his paths straight,’ ”

The gospel of the Lord.   Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON

Tim Harris will now lead the assembly in  prayer for the church, the world, and all of creation.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

God of power and might, comfort your people and come quickly to this weary world. Hear our prayers for everyone in need.

A brief silence.

Faithful God, you teach us to wait for you with faithfulness and patience. Sustain and support us in our doubts and questions. Nurture our faith as we discern and enact your mission. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Loving God, you set the stars in the sky and breathe life into the earth. Renew the face of creation where it is in need of your healing touch. Mend the wounds of environmental damage and restore balance to ecosystems so that all creation can declare your praise. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Steadfast God, you never tire of seeking justice. Where people suffer from discrimination, judgment, and injustice, speak words of truth and comfort. We pray especially for leaders and election officials in Georgia as they seek to fulfill the duties for which they were appointed. Lead us toward a world where faithfulness will sprout underfoot and righteousness rain down from above. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Leading God, you ask us to make uneven ground smooth. Make even the disparities between your people. Sustain and support people with physical and intellectual disabilities. Accompany disability advocates who work for a world accessible to all. Teach us to celebrate the great diversity in our midst. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Tender God, you know sorrow and joy alike. We pray for those in our families and congregation who are not joyful in this holiday season. Comfort those who grieve, be a companion to all who are lonely, tend those who are sick or struggling with depression, and gather all people in your healing embrace (especially for Mike, Sherri, Lizetta, Kim, Kyle, Jan, Rita,Gina, Laurie, Tracy, Jeff, Chris, Don, Douglas, and Hoyt)Hear us, O God.

SENDING SONG “Prepare the Royal Highway”  (vs 1-3)

1 Prepare the royal highway; the King of kings is near! Let ev'ry hill and valley a level road appear! Then greet the King of glory, foretold in sacred story: Hosanna to the Lord, for he fulfills God's word!

2 God's people, see him coming: your own eternal king! Palm branches strew before him! Spread garments! Shout and sing! God's promise will not fail you! No more shall doubt assail you!
Hosanna to the Lord, for he fulfills God's word!

3 Then fling the gates wide open to greet your promised king! Your king, yet ev'ry nation
its tribute too may bring. All lands will bow before him; their voices join your singing:
Hosanna to the Lord, for he fulfills God's word!

Tim Harris reads the dismissal.
